people to keep abreast and updated with the changing
environment. However, it is also important to distinguish
the difference between trends and fads to deepen our
understanding of survival and adaptability. After all, as
members of society, we should know how fads and
trends create changes in our society.

FACTORS SHAPING TRENDS

Understanding factors that shape trends can provide us

insights into how to predict trends, how they are
developing, and how they are sustained. The following
are just some of the factors that shape a trend:
1. Human needs
Humankind will instinctively tend to its needs. Our
desire to build a better world and improve the
quality of life compels us to discover, invent, and
explore new technologies, products, services,
forms of knowledge, and skills. In meeting our
needs, we enhance our intelligence, creativity, and
social skills that in turn increases our chances for
survival.
2. Historical forces:
History bears changes, upheavals, conflicts, issues, and
solutions carried on by humankind. In the process of
dealing with historical forces, humankind creates its
responses, mostly to achieve an equilibrium until the next
disruptive event happens.
The role of the government, particularly the legislature, is to
formulate policies to respond to societal needs. When
policies are enforced, behaviors change and become trends
that are practiced by the citizenry. For instance, the
increasing incidence of child abuse and other forms of
violence involving children led to the creation and
implementation of child protection policies in different social
institutions, such as family, school, hospital, social media,
and church.
3. Globalization:
The global exchange of goods and services, including
human capital, and the erasure of time and space as barriers
to connectivity have increased the interaction between states
and societies. What happens in one part of the world can
easily be picked up by the rest of the world through
information and communication technologies, such as
broadcast television and the Internet.
The globalizing world integrates market information
through global advertising platforms of transnational
corporations shown on traditional media channels and
the Internet. Thus, trends and innovations are also
carried on a global scale, ensuring the resilience of
both brand and product.
4. Digital connectivity and social media:
Social media, as enabled by digital technologies, continues to expand
and grow each day. Take Facebook for example, the most popular
social networking site in the Philippines. By now, it has grown into a
multi-use environment, catering to businesses and entrepreneurial
initiatives where information about services and goods are circulated.
Products gain mileage thanks to Facebook's expansive reach. Unlike
traditional forms of advertising that were targeted to generalized
audiences, Facebook zeroes in to precise targets. The platform uses
specific activities or status information to find more people who would
be interested in the products ads.
