The larynx
• It is a complex organ of voice production
• Composed of 9 cartilages that are connected
by membranes and ligaments
• It contains the vocal fold (“cord”)
• It is located in anterior neck, level with bodies
of C3- C6 vertebrae
• Connects the oropharynx to trachea
FUNCTIONS

• Respiratory
• Phonation
• Sphincteric Mechanism (protection)

– Epiglottis
– Thyroid
– Cricoid
• Paired Cartilages
– Arytenoid
– Corniculate
– Cuneiform

• Cricothyroid joint

• Quadrangular Membrane
• Cricothyroid ligament (conus elasticus)
Cavity of the larynx
• Inlet or aditus
