Skeletal

System of a Rat
• The skeleton of rat has 223 bones that
are distributed into the axial skeleton
and the appendicular skeleton. The axial
skeleton consists of skull, vertebral
column, sternum, ribs and ear ossicles.
The appendicular skeleton is
represented by girdles and limb bones.
Major Organs/parts and
function
• The ribs, found in the thorax region of the
skeleton system, protect vital organs such as
the heart and lungs. Major parts of the system
of the arms include six major bones humerus
radius, ulna, carpals ,metacarpals, and
phalanges which aid in movement. As for the
feet of a rat, major bones include femur,
patella, tibiofibula, tarsals, metatarsals,
phalanges
• Maxilla: part of the skull on a thin bony plate
named the palatine bone
• Mandible: forms the lower jaw and holds the
lower teeth in place.
• Femur: A bone of the leg situated between the
pelvis and knee in rats
• Pubus: lower part of the abdomen, the region
surrounding the external genital organs.
• Lumbar vertebrae: The five vertebrae situated
between the thoracic vertebrae and the sacral
vertebrae in the spinal column.
• Humerus: Long bone partly fused with the radius and
forming the inner limb between it and the carpus.
• Quadal vertabrae: bundle of spinal nerves and spinal
nerve roots, consisting of
• the second through fifth lumbar nerve pairs which
create rats tail.
Comparison to Human
• Rats and human skeletal systems are quite
similar in terms of structures. They both
contain bone structures such as humerus in
the arms, ribs to protect the same vital
organs,scapula shoulder blades, the femur,
fibula, and tibia in the legs for
movemevement,
• The skeletal system functions in
humans by providing a protective
encasement for vital organs such as the
heart, lungs, and kidneys. Much like for
humans, the skull in the rat protects the
brain. The skeletal system allow
movement in both rats and humans.
