Rationale: This course is designed to provide an intensive
orientation on Nemathelminthes and Platyhelminthes.

Course learning outcomes: The major learning outcomes of this course are to-
 acquire knowledge about fundamental concepts of Nematodes, Trematodes
and Cestodes
 outline morphology and biology of different Nematodes, Trematodes and
Cestodes
 interpret the diseases caused them and their transmission dynamics
 design prevention and control measures against them

Nemathelminthes
• (Nematos- thread/, helminthes- worm)
• Commonly called thread worm or round worm.
• A phylum of unsegmented, triploblastic, pseudocoelomic, cylindrical
or thread-like worms which are covered by a body wall having cuticle
and epidermis.
General characters
1.Mostly parasitic. Few of them are free-living.
2.They are cylindrical, elongated, slender worm like and tapers at both end.
3.Triploblastic and Bilaterally symmetrical.
4.Body is unsegmented.
5.Body cavity is filled with muscle. They are pseudocoelomate i.e. body cavity is not lined by
mesodermal layer.
6.Distinct head is lacking. However, mouth is present in anterior region.
7.Body is covered with tough and resistant cuticle.
8.Digestive system is complete and straight with both mouth and anus.
Mouth is terminal and surrounded by lips bearing sense organ. 
9.Respiratory and circulatory organs are absent.
10.These are unisexual i.e. sexes are separate with sexual dimorphism.
11.Fertilization is internal, may be cross or self.
12.Development may be direct or indirect.
13.Various lateral lines and pores are present on the surface of body.
