A Pocketful of Inference Procedures

Presented by Lynette Hudiburgh

Lecturer & STA 261 Course Coordinator,
Department of Statistics
Steps Involved

1. Create a FoldableTM (Zike, 2002)

 a graphic organizer

2. Compile the information

 Inference procedures with purpose,
assumptions, formulae, etc…

3. Personalize
 Students use own words

4. Use

Creating the FoldableTM
TM

1. Start with a “hot dog” fold but

leave ½ inch overlap

Creating the FoldableTM
TM

1. Start with a “hot dog” fold but

leave ½ inch overlap
2. Fold the paper into ninths
• Fold so that 1/3 is exposed and 2/3 are
covered
• Fold the 2/3 section in half
• Fold the 1/3 section backward
• Fold the paper in half again
• The paper will be divided into tenths when
opened

Creating the FoldableTM
TM

1. Start with a “hot dog” fold but

leave ½ inch overlap
2. Fold the paper into tenths
3. Cut along the folds (“tenths”) to
the main (first) fold on the short
side
• Creates ten tabs

4. Fold over the ½ inch overlap
• It should look like a matchbook
• Flap holds in all the tabs

Compiling the Information

• 1-proportion z-test & C.I.

• 1-mean t-test & C.I. Front
• 2-proportions z-test & C.I.
• 2-sample t-test & C.I.
• Paired t-test & C.I. Inside
• X2 GOF test
• X2 Homogeneity test
• X2 Independence test Back
• Linear regression t-test & C.I.
Personalizing Your FoldableTM
TM

• Front:
• Name of test Front
• Purpose
• Inside (on left-hand side)
• Assumptions Inside
• Sample hypotheses
• Inside (on right-hand side)
• Test statistic equation Back
• TI-calculator instructions
• Back
• Corresponding C.I. formula
Using Your FoldableTM
TM

• Fold it up and put it in your pocket

• Carry it anywhere
• Study on the go
• Portable flash card system
• Alternative method: use a sheet of
notebook paper
• Fold paper in half (hot dog fold)
• On one side, cut every third line
