Chain Drive and Rope Drive

( - - - No Numerical only Theory - - )

“Chain Drive”
Chain Drive
•It is series of links connected by pin joints. Features :
•It is intermediate between belt and gear drive •Chain Drive is popular in
•It is compact. transportation industry.
•Efficiency is more than belt but less than gear •Requires lubrication
drive. •Elements of Chain drive
Driving sprocket, Driven
sprocket and Chain

•Advantages :
•No initial tension required,
so less load on shaft
•Efficiency = 96 to 98 %
•Max velocity ratio 10 : 1
•Chain velocity = up to 25
m/s
Types of Chain
1) Load lifting Chains 3) Power transmitting chains –
2) Hauling Chains These Chains are used to
3) Power transmitting chains transmit power from input
to output shaft.
1) Load lifting Chains
Eg Link Chain

2) Hauling Chains – Used to carry

material by sliding, pulling or
carrying
Polygonal Effect

*Speed variation upto 4 % when no.

of teeth on sprocket 17
*Speed variation upto 1 % when no.
of teeth 19 to 21
Modes of Failure of Roller Chain Failure

1) Fatigue failure of link plate due to tension.

2) Fatigue failure of Rollers and bushings due to impact.
3) Wear failure of pins and bushings.
4) Galling of chain : Stick and slip phenomenon due to excess
load.
“Rope Drive”
Wire Ropes
 Application of Wire Ropes:

1. Load Lifting devices.

2. Crane
3. Construction Line.
4. Power-transmission in mills and factories

•Types of Lay : Lay
refers to manner in
which wires laid in
to strand and
strands laid into
rope.

•Wires and strands

are twisted in
opposite direction
then rope is called
as REGULAR LAY
•Wires and strands
are twisted in same
direction then rope is
called as LANG’S LAY
Stresses in Wire Rope - Tensile stress and Bending stress
