Turning Lemons into Lemonade
• The events culminating around last springs school
closures left me with two main questions…
• How was I going to ensure that students were
engaged with content material?
• What would fair and equitable assessment look like?
• If the process of delving into remote learning has
taught me one thing over the course of the last year
it is in the power of tech based assessment that not
only engages my students but allows me to asses
them along the way.

• Goal: I want to hear from my students and watch them share what they learned.
• What is it: Flipgrid is a simple free media-based platform that allows students to
record and share videos with their classmates and teachers.
• What can it be used for: icebreakers, weekly reflections, mini presentations and
the list goes on and on…
• Special features: Immersive reader built in (reads instructions posted to the
student), this is great for students who may use this application as an
accommodation.
• In addition, Flipgrid also has a rubric feature incorporated allowed the educator
to give constructive feedback to students.

Kahoot
• Goal: I want to give my students a test or quiz /
provide them with an interactive way to review
previous learning objectives.
• What is it: Kahoot is a free web based platform that
allows for educators to create interactive virtual
assessments.
• What can it be used for: checks for understanding,
review sessions, trivia games.
• Special features: at the end of each game, the
educator can view a report which can be
downloaded as an excel file, better allowing the

• Goal: I want to include checks for understanding as
my students learn.
• What is it: A web based video editor that allows
educators to add voiceovers, questions or quizzes to
pre-existing or self created videos.
• What can it be used for: Assessment, checks for
understanding, in lieu of video viewing guides.
• Special Features: All students answers are gathered
together in order to make assessment a breeze.

• Goal: I want to see what my students already know
about a given topic, or include an interactive check
for understanding in my presentation.
• What is it: A web based poll creator that allows for
educators to see students answers to questions in live
time.
• What can it be used for: Ticket in/out the door,
conversation starter, check for understanding
• Special Features: opportunity for anonymous
answers giving shy students a voice, polls can be
directly included into Presentations
