Assessment Utilizing Educational Technology

TLP Presenter Notes

Objectives Slide

• Learning how to use these tools is one thing, being able to objectively utilize data
presented to drive instruction is another.
Poll Everywhere Slide
● Summarize the answers of at least two participants in order to start presentation…
should serve as a good conversation starter and give participants hands on practice with
one of the tech tools presented.
John Dewey Quote Slide

• This quote serves as proof that we need to constantly adapt to the changing of the
times in order to best serve our students.
Turning Lemons into Lemonade Slide

• While I would consider myself to be well versed when it comes to technology, I have
found that teaching during the pandemic has really stretched me to continue to grow
and evolve in the manner that I assess my students. Overall, it has been my goal
throughout the duration of this school year to increase my students engagement when
it comes to assessment through the use of many of the tech tools that I will be touching
on throughout my presentation.
How web based assessment aids teachers and students alike
● Instant Feedback: Web-based assessment tools allow for educators to quickly provide
students with feedback, allowing for students to better understand how they can
improve moving forward.
● Largely cuts down on the time required to grade traditional assessments that
have been previously utilized.
● Flexibility of time and area: This is extremely important for the pandemic world that we
are all navigating through, as with web based assessment, students do not necessarily
need to be present in class to take the assessment much like they would have had to in
the past with paper and pencil assessment.
● Increased opportunity for creativity: Web based assessment not only allows for teachers
to be creative as there are a variety of tools that can be used in place of the traditional
paper and pencil assessment in order to track student achievement of learning goals.
This is also positive for students as it allows them to break the monotony of the
traditional paper and pencil test, and rather create a video or project that displays their
understanding of the learning goals.

Assessment Utilizing Educational Technology

● Highlight areas of concern with ease: many of the tools that we will look at as we
proceed into the presentation provide the opportunity to view reports of how your
students preformed, therefore allowing you to better target further areas of
improvement.
Reflection Slide #1
● Call upon 1-2 Teachers to answer this question
● Throughout the rest of the presentation, it is my goal to demonstrate four tech tools
that I utilize on an everyday basis that I find meet all four of these criteria for both
educators and students alike.
Tech tools Highlighted

• Provide brief overview of each tool highlighted before continuing on any further, ask
teachers if they have heard of or even used any of these tools in their classroom.
FlipGrid

• Personally I can thank the TIP’s program for introducing me to this program as I had not
heard of it previously. However I have found great success in utilizing this tool in my
own classes (namely my psychology class) as due to the nature of COVID and the fact
that students cannot give presentations in class, this I have found has been the next
best thing. It not only allows for students to harness their creative nature but allows for
their classmates as well as myself to provide valuable feedback to them as well. The last
time I used this tool I had my psychology students create a presentation on a Phobia of
their choosing and record it to flipgrid… I was blown away by their creativity.
FlipGrid Video
● F - FLIPGRID: Formative assessments A to Z series [Video file]. (2020, July 07). Retrieved
April 05, 2021, from https://youtu.be/lU1uxz0tU-U
● This video provides a great break down of the special features included in flipgrid that
make assessing student progress a breeze
Kahoot

• While I was aware of the fact that Kahoot provided the educator with a variety of
resources in order to track student progress and performance on assessments, I was not
aware until recently that these reports could be downloaded as excel workbooks and
saved for future use.

Assessment Utilizing Educational Technology

Reflection Slide #2
● Call on one to two participants to answer this question, review the report feature
covered in the last slide once more in order to get conversation flowing.
EdPuzzle

• I have found that this tech tool has been increasingly beneficial throughout remote and
hybrid learning, as it provides me with the opportunity to assign videos as wrap up’s to
the lessons that have already been completed. In addition, I find that EdPuzzle is s good
alternative to the video viewing guides of old as EdPuzzle neatly stores each students
answers, therefore making assessment a breeze.
PollEverywhere

• This is one of the tools that I utilize most frequently for ticket in/out the door activities.
While the anonymous nature of it is beneficial for some students who don’t always care
to share in class, it can also be difficult to check student answers in order to make sure
they are appropriate as they appear in live time. In order to fix this, I generally freeze
the screen on my end and only display answers after I have had the opportunity to read
through them.
• I also find that these polls are generally very good at sparking conversation in regards to
new topics
Final Reflection Slide
● Potential confines include technology issues, as some students may have access while
others may not. While it may be a quicker process on the back end, it may prove more
tedious to initially set up online assessment. May foster Loneliness, amongst students
