As for going beyond basic productivity tools I chose to use the application Nearpod which can take a simple instructive PowerPoint taught by the teacher and makes it something more interactive for the students. Although this lesson would not be student lead I feel as though the use of this would be much more impactful for students. As for the different sections of UDL I believe this lesson hits on the representation form which will become much more apparent when I go into my discussion of how Nearpod is utilized in the classroom.
Lesson idea implementation:
For this lesson I would be adapting a preexisting PowerPoint over newtons three laws and molding it into a Nearpod lesson for my students. Nearpod is a productivity tool that utilizes all the good parts of other PowerPoint software’s and adds in multiples useful features. One of the biggest featured being the ability to poll or quiz your students in real time and allow them to answer in the form of multiple choice and short answers depending on how you set it up. This is also an excellent way to allow for questions especially for students who may not be willing to raise their hand. Those students can simply anonymously write in a question and then begin the class discussion from that. Another benefit of using this type of PowerPoint would be allowing your students to give you real time feedback on the lesson and the software. Simply add in a slide at the end that allows them to write some brief thoughts and use that to adjust. The last benefit I will mention is that with nearpod not only are students responding from their personal devices to questions, but it also has every slide on their phone with them so not only can they follow along but if they would like to go back a slide they can do that without having to ask if necessary. Reflective Practice: Although I truly love the implementation of Nearpod into classes, my one problem with my lesson is that it is not student centered at all. I do understand that not all lessons can be Bloom’s creating level and LoTi level 6 so in that regard I still believe that my lesson is valuable as is. There always comes a day in class where you have to simply deliver information to students if that is the medium they respond to best and utilizing the functions available to you in a tool like Nearpod is the best way to make the most of those type of lessons. Nearpod not only allows for more student engagement, but also allows for differentiation for those who need it. Especially those who may be hearing or visually impaired so in that regard this lesson is utilized the best it can be in both Bloom’s and LoTi levels.
