Learners will explain the occurrence

of atmospheric phenomena
(breezes, monsoons, and ITCZ) that
are commonly experienced in the
country as a result of the
Philippines’ location with respect to
the equator, and surrounding bodies
of water and landmasses.

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

Being located beside the Pacific

Ocean, the Philippines is prone
to typhoons. Learners will
explain how typhoons develop,
affected by landforms and
bodies of water, and follow
certain paths as they move
within PAR.

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

Learners will distinguish between

weather and climate. They will
explain how different factors affect
climate of an area. They will be also
introduce to climatic phenomena
that occur over a wide area (e.g. El

How Big Is Your

Carbon Footprint?

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

The total amount of greenhouse gases

produced to directly and indirectly support
human activities, usually expressed in
equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) is
known as Carbon Footprint.
SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

• Each person’s carbon footprint is the

average of all emissions of CO2
(carbon dioxide), which was induced by
activities in a given time frame.

• A single carbon footprint is usually

calculated for the time period of a year.

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

• Burning of fossil fuels is one of the

main sources of carbon dioxide
emission.

• Too much concentration of carbon

dioxide in the atmosphere could lead to
increase in global temperature.

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

What would be the outcome if there is

too much carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere?

More carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

mean that the equilibrium temperature will
be higher as these gases absorb more
heat. It results to the increase of global
temperature.

Basic Information about El Niño

• abnormal and lengthy warming in the eastern

part of the pacific ocean

• occurs at the irregular intervals of two to

seven years and lasts for nine months or two
years at most

• starts at the end of the year or during the

Christmas season
SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

Events during El Niño

• trade winds move from west to east they

collects warm air

• when trade winds are weakened, they

causes the piling up of warm surface water
and making the part of the Pacific Ocean
warmer leading to the El Niño phenomenon

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

• happens when the upwelling of colder water

is blocked by the large quantities of warm
surface water.

(The cause of the weakening of the trade

winds is still unknown and it’s still being
investigated)

SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EARTH AND SPACE

Effects of El Niño in the Country

• some areas in the Philippines will experience

this climatic phenomenon due to the increase
of the temperature in the eastern part of the
Pacific Ocean

• some areas in the country will experience

near to above average rainfall and some
areas may experience drier than normal
rainfall.
SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

• causes stronger thunderstorm

disturbance and massive storms

of some species.

Besides the effect on marine water, brackish

water and fish ponds have also been affected
due to the reduction of rainfall and increase in
the salinity of tidal water.

influences climate

2 Wind pushes clouds toward the mountains.

____
4 Windward side of the mountain gets rainfall.
____
1 Water evaporates into the air.
____
5 As the clouds come over the mountain, they
____
lose their water, then fall and heat up again.
3 The clouds rise, the air cools and the water
____
vapor condenses.

Let's Check!
Why does cloud formation disappear as the air
moves slowly towards the leeward side of a
mountain?
a. The amount of water vapor is not enough.
b. The air condenses as it moves to the
leeward side.
c. The temperature becomes lower.
d. There is too much water vapor.

increases.
d. The temperature decreases as the altitude
increases.
SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division

Let's Check!
Why do places at the same latitude but
different altitudes have different climate?
a. Same amount of heat received.
b. Amount of precipitation differs.

temperature.
SCIENCE CROSS-SPECIALIZATION Teaching and Learning Division
