Sustainable of Environment
Sustainable of Environment is the process of making
sure current processes of interaction with the
environment are pursued with the idea of keeping the
environment as pristine as naturally (originally)
possible.
1.0 THE IMPORTANCE OF SED
1. Improved quality of life.
1. Environmental issue is a transboundry .
2. Tsunami 2004 – Conservation and rehabilitation of
costal area ie mangrove forests.
3. To make development sustainable.
4. Environment distroyed…development stop!
Cont.
a business model that will not only be beneficial for
the business but also contribute to safety of the
environment.
environmental sustainability can be considered a
strong basis to ensure sustainable development and
the emphasis should be on environmental and social
welfare along with economic growth
sustained growth of an economy is not possible
without considering the environmental aspect
Cont…
companies providing environmental solutions are also
enjoying innovative market opportunities (eg SFD )
In order to ensure environmental sustainability, balance is
required between ecological system protection, economic
development and maintenance of cultural and social well
being of communities
For instance companies such as PepsiCo Inc have been
following a global strategy on environmental
sustainability. The company has reduced the use of water
and energy in order to reduce greenhouse gas emission
and bring down the cost of waste and packaging.
Cont…
Today, only when a company's business activities
cause no damage to the environment, it will be
considered better business
Natural resources should be used in a balanced
manner so that the demands of future generation are
also met.
environmental sustainability, sustainable
development, sustainable business and sustainable
development trend eg?
Cont…
The ozone layer is slowly decreasing, and as it
continues to deplete the more scientists will worry
about the increase on natural disasters, like heat
waves, flash floods, severe hurricanes, etc.
Corporate Sustainbility
Corporate sustainability is a business approach
that creates long-term consumer and employee value
by:
creating a “green” strategy aimed towards the natural
environment
how a business operates in the social, cultural, and
economic environment.
Business practices built around social and
environmental considerations.
Environment Needs
Fulfill environment needs such as energy efficiency,
limiting product waste and toxicity, and designing
innovative products.
Sustainability Officer leading a department with a
mandate to proactively develop and implement a
corporate sustainability strategy. Every large scale
plantation has one.
Eco-efficiency
The term eco-efficiency was coined by the World
Business Council for Sustainable Development
(WBCSD) in its 1992 publication "Changing Course".
It is based on the concept of creating more goods and
services while using fewer resources and creating less
waste and pollution
CBD
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) /
Rio Convention, is an international legally binding
treaty (June5 1992; Enforced Dec 29, 1993 ). The
Convention has three main goals:
conservation of biological diversity (or biodiversity);
sustainable use of its components; and
fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from
genetic resources
# Develop national strategies for the conservation and
sustainable use of biological diversity.
NAGOYA PROTOCOL
the Convention recognizes that ecosystems, species
and genes must be used for the benefit of humans.
2010 October
Measures and incentives for the conservation and
sustainable use of biological diversity.
CITES
Convention on International Trade in
Endangered Species
1963, enforced 1975.
to ensure that international trade in specimens of
wild animals and plants does not threaten their
survival
Kyoto Protocol
The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change
(UNFCCC or FCCC), aimed at fighting global warming
=> reduction of CO2, NO, CH3, SOFl6 ). The
UNFCCC is an international environmental treaty (all
signed except USA) with the goal of achieving
"stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the
atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous
anthropogenic interference with the climate system.“
Adopted Dec 11, 1997 . Enforced Feb 16, 2005.
Examples
1. Organic Farming – Environmently Friendly Farming
2. FSC certification for timber in SFD Deramakot,
Sandakan.
3. Palm Oil plantations following RSPO and conduct
HCVF inventory
HCVF
Full name = High Conservation Value Forest. Made
by FSC and introduced in Malaysia by WWF.
2 tools i) For Malaysia ii) For Global
Types of HCVF:
HCV 1: Forest areas containing protected areas,
threatened/endangered species or endemic species or
critical temporal use.
HVC2: Landscape – Forest area as linkage
HCV3: Ecosystems eg Lowland mixed dipterocarp
forests
HCVF (Cont…)
HCV 4: Forest area provides basic needs/service
4.1: Watershed protection
4.2 Erosion control
4.3 Barriers to destructive fire
HCV 5: Basic needs of local communities
HCV 6: Cultural Identity of local communities.
Example
1. Locality: HS Trus Madi
1. Apakah nilai-nilai HCV yg wujud di kawasan ini?
2. Adakah kawasan ini mampu mengekalkan nilai-nilai
HCV yg wujud ini?
3. Apakah ancaman-ancaman utama bagi mengekalkan
kualiti HCV di kawasan ini.?
4. Bagaimanakan anda dapat memperbaiki keadaan ini?
