“PRONOUNS”

8-4. REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS
◦ Reflexive pronouns are words ending in -self or -selves that are used when the subject and the object of a sentence are
the same (e.g., I believe in myself). A reflexive pronouns reflects back upon a sentences. The nine English reflexive
pronouns are myself, yourself, himself, herself, oneself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, and themselves.
◦ example:
1. I cut myself when I was making dinner last night.
2. I hope you enjoy yourselves at the party tonight!
3. My phone isn't working properly. It turns itself off for no reason.
4. We need to believe in ourselves moreWe use "by + reflexive pronoun" to emphasize the same person. 
◦ For example,
◦ "I made this cake by myself." Here, the speaker emphasized that he was the one who made the cake, using a reflexive
pronoun. we can just say "I made it." However, if we say “I made it by myself, ” then the tone of the sentence becomes
stronger and there is an emphasis on the fact that YOU made it all yourself.
8-5 IMPERSONAL PRONOUN

◦ We can use impersonal pronoun to talk about people in general or for unspecified
objects. There are three impersonal pronouns: you, one, and they. You and one carry the
same meaning as they refer to “any person, people in general”. However, you is less
formal than one and more common in everyday English.
◦ Examples:
1) You should pay to attention to the announcement. (informal)
2) One should pay to attention to the announcement. (formal)As an impersonal
pronoun, they means “some people ” in spoken English.
◦ Example:
A : Why did Ann lose her job?
B : They fired her.On the sentence above, they refers to the people for whom Ann worked.
