ENGINEERING LAB 3
Highway Laboratory Testing 5TH MAY 2021
 Los Angeles abrasion test measures the aggregate toughness and
abrasion resistance such as crushing, degradation, and disintegration.
The aggregates used as a wearing course of highway pavements are
subjected to wearing due to movement of traffic. When vehicles are
LOS ANGELES moving, the soil particles present between inflated tires and road
ABRASION TEST surface cause abrasion of the aggregates. For this reason, the
INTRODUCTION aggregates should be hard enough to resist abrasion.

ASTM C131-87 & C535-89 or BS 812: Part 113 gives methods of

determining the Los Angeles abrasion value of an aggregate.

EXPERIMENT 2. LOS ANGELES ABRASION TEST

LOS ANGELES
ABRASION TEST
 “Los Angeles abrasion” is a simulative test that simulates the abrasive
action by use of standard steel balls when mixed with aggregates in a
drum having inside diameter of 711mm and inside length of 508mm for
specific number of revolutions.
LOS ANGELES  The Los Angeles abrasion test is applicable to samples of aggregate
ABRASION TEST that are retained on the No. 4 ASTM sieve.

 The Los Angeles abrasion value is expressed as the percentage by mass

of material passing a No. 12 ASTM sieve (equivalent to a No. 10 BS
sieve) after the test.
 To determine the aggregate abrasion value (AAV) in order to evaluate the
ease or difficulty with which aggregate particles are likely to wear under
attrition from traffic.

TEST OBJECTIVE Or

 To determine the hardness of aggregates that are used in highway pavement,

and to evaluate the resistance of coarse aggregate against abrasion and
mechanical degradation during handling, construction, and usage.

DETERMINATION
 The mean results shall be reported to the nearest 0.1
Los Angeles abrasion machine Steel ball abrasive charges Scoop

APPARATUS

Test Sieves Electronic Balance Drying Oven

 Place approximately 5kg of coarse aggregate retained on the No.4 ASTM sieve (4.75 mm)

into the Los Angeles abrasion machine. (mass M1).

 Then feed in 12 steel balls of 44-48cm in diameter with mass between 390-445g each as

abrasive charges.

PROCEDURE  Turn on the machine and let the drum rotate at 30-33 rpm for 500 revolutions.

 After 500 revolutions, stop the machine and take out all steel balls. Collect all aggregates in

the drum. Pass the aggregate through No.12 ASTM sieve (1.70 mm) and weigh the material

passing this sieve. (mass M2).

 Repeat for the second sample from the same source.

 Determine Los Angeles abrasion value.

Remarks:

 The test gave a satisfactory indication of the in-service behavior of an
aggregate. Suggested maximum Los Angeles abrasion values were 40 for
bituminous materials and 50 for concrete aggregates. Typical Los Angeles
RESULT
INTERPRETATION abrasion value for coarse aggregate is 20% or lower. For softer aggregate
such as limestone, Los Angeles abrasion value is about 50% or higher.
Aggregates with abrasion value over 50% are not suitable for road
pavements.
