Road Maintenance – periodic and routine
Periodic maintenance
• Repair of minor damage before it becomes major and blocks the road
• Examples – repairing broken drains, regravelling
• Unpredictable
• Need materials and equipment
• Paid by measuring the completed work
• Best done by contractors with transport and cash
Routine maintenance
• Cleaning of the road to keep it in good condition and prevent minor
damage
• Examples – cleaning drains, cutting vegetation, small landslides
• Predictable
• Need hand tools and labour
• Paid by a monthly fee for good performance
• Best done by workers from the local community – Community

Community Maintenance Groups – CMGs
• Typically based on Sukos, supported by the Suko Chief
• Work is predictable and can be planned by the CMG for each month
• CMG has a leader and members – the leader also does the work

Payment to CMGs
Every month end, there will be joint site inspection by MPW, R4D, local auth
ority and contractor along with CMG leader to verify work done. If some se
ctions are not maintained/cleared as per R4D standard, then payment will
be deducted.
