What is Recount Text?

Often you will want to tell other people about something that
has happened in your life. You might want to tell about excitin
g things that happened when you were on holidays last year.
Speaking or writing about past events is called a recount.

A recount text is a piece of text that retells past events, usually


in the order in which they happened. The purpose of the reco
unt is to give the audience a description of what occurred and
when it occurred.

The purpose of this text is to retell past events/experiences


Generic Structure of Recount Text

Orientation : It gives the readers the background information


needed to understand the text, such as who was
involved, where it happened, and when it happened.
Events : A series of events, ordered in a chronological
sequence.
Re-orientation : A personal comment about the event or what
happened in the end.
Language Features of Recount Text

 Using the simple past tense, past continuous tense, past perfect ten
se, and past perfect continuous tense.
 Using temporal sequence, e.g. On Saturday. On Monday, On Sunda
y
 Focus on specific participant, e.g. I (the writer)
 Using the conjunctions, such as: then, before, after, etc.
 Using action verb, e.g. went, stayed

Earthquake
Let me remind you my experience during an earthquake last week. When th
Orientation e earthquake happened, I was on my car. I was driving home from my voca
tion to Bali.
Suddenly my car lunched to one side, to the left. I thought I got flat tire. I
did not know that it was an earthquake. I knew it was an earthquake when
I saw some telephone and electricity poles falling down to the ground, like
matchsticks.

Then I saw a lot of rocks tumbling across the road. I was trapped by the ro
ck. Even I could not move my car at all. There were rocks everywhere. There
was nothing I could do but left the car and walked along way to my house,
in the town.
When I reached my town, I was so surprised that there was almost nothing
Re-Orientation left. The earthquake made a lot of damage to my town. Although nothing
was left, I thanked God that nobody was seriously injured.
Biographical of Recount Text
Raden Adjeng Kartini (21 April 1879 –17 September 1904), sometimes known as Raden
Ayu Kartini, was a prominent Indonesian national hero from Java. She was a pioneer in t
he area of education for girls and women’s right for Indonesians. Kartini was from a no
Orientation ble family. Since childhood, she studied and read a lot.
Kartini was allowed to attend ELS (Europese Lagere School), here Kartini learned Dutch.
After the age of 12, she has to stay at home because she has been proposed to be mar
ried. Because of Kartini spoke Dutch, she started studying on her own at home and wro
te letters to correspondence friends from Holland. One of them is Rosa Abendanon wh
o supports her a lot. From European books, newspapers and magazines, Kartini was inte

nesian women, because she saw that Indonesian women were at a low social status.
Kartini saw women's struggle to gain freedom, autonomy and legal equality as part of a
broader movement. Among the books that Kartini read before she was 20, are the titles
Max Havelaar and Letters of Love by Multatuli, which she read twice in November 1901.

Kartini was died. But his passion and dreams always were in our hearts. Currently, the pr

Bandung as Sea of Fire


Bandung as Sea of Fire was a fire that occurred in the city of Bandung on
Orientation March 24, 1946. Within seven hours, about 200,000 residents of Bandung b
urned their homes.
British troops as part of the Brigade MacDonald arrived in Bandung on Oct
ober 12, 1945. Bandung was deliberately burned by TRI and local people. T
here were black smoke billowing high into the air everywhere. The British A
Events rmy began to attack so fierce. The greatest battle happened in the Village n
ame Dayeuh Kolot, in South Bandung, where there were a large ammunitio
n depot belonging to British. In this battle, Barisan Rakyat Indonesia  destro
yed the ammunition depot. 
The strategy to fire Bandung was considered because the power of TRI and
Re-Orientation people’s militia was not comparable to the British forces and NICA. This inci
dent inspired to create the famous song “Halo, Halo Bandung”.
