WEB-BASED MAIL

E-mail is such a common application that some

websites today provide this service to anyone who
accesses the site. Three common sites are Hotmail,
Yahoo, and Google. The idea is very simple. Let us go
through two cases:
Internet Protocols

Commonly used internet protocols are

 TCP/IP

 FTP

 HTTP

 Tenet
TCP/IP

TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control

Protocol /Internet Protocol.
TCP/IP is actually a collection of protocols or
rules that govern the way data travels
from one machine to another across
networks.
TCP/IP

TCP/IP has two major components-TCP and

IP
The IP component does the following:
 Envelopes and addresses the data

 Enables the network to read the envelope

and forward the data to its destination

 Defines how much data can fit in a single

envelope( a packet)
TCP/IP

The relationship between data, IP and

network is often compared to the
relationship between a letter, its
addressed envelope and the postal
system.
TCP/IP

The TCP component does the following:

 Breaks the data up into packets that the

network can handle efficiently

 Verifies whether all the packets have

arrived at their destination

 Reassembles the data
Internet Addressing
IP address

 IP Address
An IP address is an identifier for a
particular machine on a particular
network.
An IP address consists of four sections
separated by periods. Each section
contains a number ranging from 0 to 255.
IP Address

The IP address have the following

characteristics in common:
 IP addresses are unique

 No two machines can have the same IP

number
 IP addresses are also global and standardized

 All machines connected to the internet agree

to use the same scheme

DOMAIN NAMES

 A domain name is a way to identify and

locate computers connected to the
internet. A domain name is an
identification string that defines a realm of
administrative autonomy, authority, or
