Philosophy
Philosophy is defined as the body of
principles underling a branch of
learning or major principle.
Principle may be defined as the basic
generalization that is accepted as true
and that can be used for the reason of
basic or conduct.
What is Logic ?
Aristotle defined logic as “new
reason” because it allows us to learn
what we do not know, and “ necessary
reason” because its conclusion are
inescapable.
Logic
Logic comes from the Greek word “logos”
which has a variety of meaning including;
words, thought, idea, argument, accounting.
Logic is the study of reasoning or the study
of the principles and criteria of valid
interface and demonstration.
Logic System
The logic system should consist of
three things:
Consistency

Soundness

completeness
Types of Logic
Formal logic
Informal logic
Symbolic logic
Mathematical logic
Formal logic
Formal logic is what may be seen as
traditional logic or philosophical logic to be
precise it is the study of inference with
purely formal and explicit content.
Formal System
A formal system also called a logical calculus
is used to derive at one expression or
conclusion from one or more other
expressions called premises. These premises
may be axioms or theorems.
Deductive
Reasoning
At the core of deductive reasoning is the
syllogism also known as term logic, where one
proposition (the conclusion) is inferred from
two others (the premises), each of which has
one term in common with the conclusion.
Inductive
Reasoning
Inductive reasoning is the process of
deriving a reliable generalization from
observations, so that the premises of an
argument are believed to support the
conclusion, but do not necessarily ensure it.
Informal Logic
Informal Logic is a modern discipline which
studies natural language arguments, and
attempts to develop a logic to assess, analyze
and improve ordinary language or everyday
reasoning.
Symbolic Logic
Symbolic Logic is the study of symbolic
abstractions that capture the formal features
of logical inference. It frequently uses complex
mathematical calculus and it is concerned with
the relations of symbols to each other.
Mathematical
Logic
It is the study of a combination of
mathematical reasoning and the techniques of
formal logic to mathematics as well as the
application of mathematical techniques to the
representation and analysis of formal logic.
Benefits to the
Teacher
 It helps with decision making
 Foster better understanding of content area.
 Allows teacher to detect what their students
understand from what they don’t
understand.
 Helps students to be critical thinkers
