Why is it important to define the context?

Context is a grounded process which

you design for specific group of
people, in a specific setting, and for
specific amount of time
Why is it important to define the context?
Tools to adapt to the context

There are factors to consider in defining the context:

1. People:
- Students: how many, age, gender, culture(s), other
language(s), purpose(s), education, profession,
experience
- Other Stakeholders: School administrators,
parents, funders, community
2. Physical Setting:
- School location: Convenience setting or not
- Classroom: size, furniture, light, noise, always
the same classroom?
Tools to adapt to the context

3. Nature of course and institution:

- type/purpose of course
- Mandatory
- Open enrolment
- Relation to current/previous courses
- Prescribed curriculum or not
- Required tests or not
4. Teaching Resources
- Materials available
- Required text?
- Develop own Materials?
- Equipment: video, photocopying, audio cd, etc.
- Clerical support
Tools to adapt to the context

5. Time
- How many hours total over what span of time
- How often class meets
- For how long each time
- Day of week, time of day
- Where fits in schedule of students
- Students timeline
The Importance of Knowing the context for Course Design

1. It gives and allows the teachers to have a realistic relationship with the students
and accomplishment on doing the general purpose of the course
2. Knowing the equipment or whether support is available or not will help us make
choices about how much and what kind of material to prepare.
3. It helps us to focus on what is realistic and appropriate for the students
4. Information about time can help us make decisions about how many areas of
content we can realistically address within the time frame of the course
5. Information about teaching resources will help the teachers make decisions
about the kinds of materials they choose or develop
6. It can help to make decisions about the content or develop the previous content
7. It can help to make decisions what is appropriate to cover and how the students
will be assessed
