FOLDED DIPOLE ANTENNA

WHAT IS FOLDED DIPOLE?

• The folded dipole is essentially a single antenna made up of two elements. One
element is fed directly (Driven), whereas the other is conductively coupled at the
ends (Parasitic). Each elements is one half wavelength long.
• The fact that the second conductor is “folded” makes the current in the two
conductors of the antenna flow in the same direction.
TWO TYPES OF ANTENNA ELEMENTS:

Driven element - A driven element obtains its power directly from the transmitter
or, as a receiving antenna; it delivers the received energy directly to the receiver.
Parasitic element(non-driven) - A parasitic element is located near the driven
element from which it gets its power. It is placed close enough to the driven
element to permit coupling.
RADIATION PATTERN AND PICTURE
PARAMETERS

Note: Dipole antenna impedance

Zₒ=73+42.5j Ω ; Zₒ real part 73≈75Ω
In folded dipole:
X=λ/2 ,m ,λ=c/F ;c=3x10⁸m/s and F=desired frequency
d=diameter of the arch, 3to5cm in most applications
Z= n²*Zₒ ,Ω ;where n=no. of antenna elements
WORKING
ARRAY ANTENNA

• An antenna array is formed when two or more

antenna elements are combined to form a single
antenna. An antenna elements is an individual
radiator, such as a half or quarter wave dipole.
The purpose if an array is to increase the
directivity and as well as the gain of an antenna
system and concentrate the radiated power with
in a smaller geographic area.
ADVANTAGES
• Increase in bandwidth.
Note: The bandwidth can bs increased even further by making the dipole
elements larger in diameter(Fat dipoles).
• Increase in impedance.
When higher impedance feeders need to be used, or when the impedance of the
dipole is reduced by factors such as parasitic elements, a folded dipole provides a
significant increase in impedance level that enables the antenna to be matched
more easily to the feeder available.
• A folded dipole maximizes the signal strength.
DISADVANTAGES

• Displacement and adjustment of antenna is a hassle.

• Outdoor management can be difficult when antenna size increases.
APLLICATIONS

• Mainly used as a feeder element in Yagi antenna, Parabolic antenna, turnstile antenna, log
periodic antenna, phased and reflector arrays, etc.
• Generally used in radio receivers.
• Most commonly used in TV receiver antennas.
