TYPE 0 (General Truths)
• Type 0 is used to express
something which is ALWAYS
true.
• We can use WHEN instead of
IF.
If-clause:
Present Simple If/When it RAINS, the roads
Main clause: GET slippery and dangerous.
Present Simple
Type 1 (Real Present)
• Type 1 is used to express real
or very probable situations
in the present or future.
• It’s also used to give
instructions. If they WORK hard, they WILL
If-clause: FINISH the project on time.
Present Simple If they FINISH the project, CALL
Main clause: me.
Future,
Imperative, If they WORK hard, they MAY

Type 2 (Unreal Present)
• They are used to express
imaginary situations which are
contrary to facts in the present
and, therefore, are unlikely to
happen in the present or future.
• They are also used to give advice.

Past Simple
Main clause:
If the weather WERE BETTER, we

Type 3 (Unreal Past)
• They are used to express
situations, which are
contrary to facts in the past.
• They are also used to express
regrets and criticism. If he HAD BEEN more careful,

Past Perfect
Main clause:
would / could / might / may If you HADN’T HAD a lot of luck,

MIXED CONDITIONALS
• We can form mixed Type 2 – Type 3
conditionals if the context
permits it, by combining an If you WERE more sensible, you
