Fire Alarms
A fire alarm system is an active fire protection system that controls all
the fire alarm modules in a building.

It is composed of alarm initiating devices (smoke detectors and heat

sensors), alarm notification appliances (sirens or devices that produce
loud noises), fire control units (sprinkler systems or fire extinguisher
systems), power supplies and wirings.

The fire alarm system can be set off automatically by smoke detectors,
heat detectors or manually. These sensors are set to detect certain
levels of heat or smoke that could be an indication of fire.

A loud bell or a siren sometimes accompanied by blinking or flashing

lights for individuals who have hearing problems, blasts to alert
occupants in the building.

Smoke Detectors
• A smoke detector is a device that senses smoke, typically as an
indicator of fire.

• Commercial smoke detectors issue a signal to a

fire alarm control panel as part of a fire alarm system, while
household smoke detectors, also known as smoke alarms, generally
issue an audible or visual alarm from the detector itself or several
detectors if there are multiple smoke detectors interlinked.

• Smoke detectors are housed in plastic enclosures, typically shaped

like a disk about 150 millimetres (6 in) in diameter and 25
millimetres (1 in) thick, but shape and size vary. Smoke can be
detected either optically (photoelectric) or by physical process (
ionization).

Heat Detectors
A heat detector is a fire alarm device designed to respond when the
convected thermal energy of a fire increases the temperature of a heat
sensitive element.

The thermal mass and conductivity of the element regulate the rate flow of

heat into the element.

All heat detectors have this thermal lag. Heat detectors have two main
classifications of operation, "rate-of-rise" and "fixed temperature". The heat
detector is used to help in the reduction of property damage.

Heat detectors commonly have a label on them that reads "Not a life safety
device". That is because heat detectors are not meant to replace
smoke detectors in the bedrooms or in the hallway outside of the bedrooms. A
heat detector will nonetheless notify of a fire in a kitchen or utility area, e.g.,
laundry room, garage, or attic, where smoke detectors should not be installed
as dust or other particles would affect the smoke detector and cause false
alarms.

Fire Extinguishers
• A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to
extinguish or control small fires, often in emergency situations. It is
not intended for use on an out-of-control fire, such as one which
has reached the ceiling, endangers the user (i.e., no escape route,
smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise requires the expertise
of a fire brigade. Typically, a fire extinguisher consists of a hand-
held cylindrical pressure vessel containing an agent that can be
discharged to extinguish a fire. Fire extinguishers manufactured
with non-cylindrical pressure vessels also exist but are less
common.

• There are two main types of fire extinguishers: stored-pressure and

cartridge-operated. In stored pressure units, the expellant is stored
in the same chamber as the firefighting agent itself. Depending on
the agent used, different propellants are used. With dry chemical
extinguishers, nitrogen is typically used; water and foam
extinguishers typically use air.

Fire Sprinklers
• A fire sprinkler system is a simple, but key, active component of a domestic
or commercial building’s fire protection system.
• Installed in ceilings or side walls, the system consists of a water supply, a
water distribution piping system and sprinkler heads. The sprinkler
discharges water automatically when a fire is detected, though it is not
triggered by smoke. It controls or extinguishes the fire, so is both a fire
detection and suppression system.
• Sprinkler systems have been around since the late 19 th century, when they
were pioneered by Hiram Stevens Maxim. They are now extensively used
worldwide, with over 40 million sprinkler heads fitted each year. A system
will generally involve water being held under pressure in a network of
pipes running through a building.
• There are four main types of fire sprinkler system:
• Wet pipe
• Dry pipe
• Deluge
• Pre-action

Fire Hydrants
• Fire hydrant system is a safety measure or emergency equipment
required in buildings that comprises a series of components that
when assembled together provide a source of water to assist fire
• A fire hydrant is an active fire protection measure, and a source of
water provided in most urban, suburban and rural areas with
municipal water service to enable firefighters to tap into the
municipal water supply to assist in extinguishing a fire. It works
effectively in improving the fire fighting capacity of a place where it is
installed. Apart from fire fighting purpose, these hydrated systems are
also used in several other applications such as water transfer,
irrigation etc.
• Such systems fight with the fire using well designed water distribution
system that includes water tank and fire pumps. It also has distributed
piping system which is connected all over the building using the pipes,
nozzles and hydrants. The main purpose of using fire hydrant system
is to give best possible source of water to each corner of the building.
It helps in protecting the building by simply making control on fire
during an emergency.

Fire Hose
A fire hose is a very high pressure hose that is used to take water to a
fire. It may also carry fire retardant materials.

Fire hoses can be attached to either a fire engine or a fire hydrant,

and the pressure is between 800 and 2000 kPa. Drying of fire hoses
after use is very important because water that is left in a hose can
cause deterioration. As a result, fire houses have large structures
designed to dry out the hoses.

Fire hoses that have larger capacities carry more water at low
temperatures. If the hose is of a smaller diameter, it will need higher
pressure.
