Light based object counter with 7-segment display.
2
OBJECTIVE AND OUTCOMES
OBJECTIVE
• Design a light based object counter with 7-segment display (CD4026).
OUTCOMES
• At the end of this lesson, student will be able to read and extract
relevant information from the data sheets of the electronic components.
• Also, student will be able to solve design problems by integrating logic
gates with sensors and actuators.

4
Design Problem
Design a light based object counter
with 7-segment display (CD4026).
5
Tools required
6
Voltage divider
• In voltage divider using just two series resistors and an input voltage, we can
create an output voltage that is a fraction of the input.
7
LDR (Light Dependent resistor)
• The resistance of a LDR decreases with increasing incident light
intensity.
Temperature sensor LM-35
• The analog output voltage of LM-35 increases at the rate of 10mv/oC
9
Operational Amplifier as Comparator
• Operational amplifiers are linear devices that have all the
properties required for nearly ideal DC amplification and are
therefore used extensively in signal conditioning, filtering or to
perform mathematical operations such as add, subtract, integration
and differentiation.
• the op-amp voltage comparator
compares the magnitudes of two
voltage inputs and determines
which is the largest of the two.

REVIEW
• CD4026 is an IC which can perform the function of both a counter as
well a 7-segment Driver.
• The 7-segment display, consists of seven LEDs (hence its name)
arranged in a rectangular fashion.
• Seven segment is used to display alphanumeric characters.
• Common cathode has all the cathodes of the 7-segments connected
directly together and the Common anode has all the anodes of the 7-
segments connected together.
• 4026 can be combined to achieve higher count value.

What you have achieved today!!!
Course Objective
• To conceive, analyse, design and build combinational and sequential digital logic solutions
for everyday problems.
Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, a student will be able to:
1. identify relevant information to supplement the digital system design.
2. analyze the elements of digital system abstractions such as digital representations of
information, digital logic and Boolean algebra.
3. design digital systems based on concepts that enable autonomous behaviour.
4. prepare professional quality textual and graphical presentations.
5. work in a team that can propose, design, implement and report on digital systems’ project.
