ROLLED PAPER STORAGE LEC-14

Definitions
 3.3.33 Column (Rolled Paper). A single vertical stack of rolls.
 3.3.8.2 Closed Array (Rolled Paper). A vertical storage arrangement in which the distances between
columns in both directions are short [not more than 2 in. (50 mm) in one direction and 1 in. (25 mm) in the
other].
 3.3.8.4 Open Array (Rolled Paper). A vertical storage arrangement in which the distance between columns
in both directions is lengthy (all vertical arrays other than closed or standard).
 3.3.8.5* Standard Array (Rolled Paper). A vertical storage arrangement in which the distance between
columns in one direction is short [1 in. (25 mm) or less] and is in excess of 2 in. (50 mm) in the other
direction.
 3.3.48 Core (Rolled Paper). The central tube around which paper is wound to form a roll.

Definitions
 3.3.182.1 Banded Roll Paper Storage. Rolls provided with a circumferential steel strap (10 mm) or wider]
at each end of the roll.
 3.3.182.2 Horizontal Roll Paper Storage. Rolls stored with the cores in the horizontal plane (on-side
storage).
 3.3.182.4 Vertical Roll Paper Storage. Rolls stored with the cores in the vertical plane (on-end storage).
 3.3.182.3* Roll Paper Storage Height. The maximum vertical distance above the floor at which roll paper
is normally stored.
 3.3.182.5* Wrapped Roll Paper Storage. Rolls provided with a complete heavy Kraft covering around both
sides and ends.

 20.4.10* Classification of Rolled Paper Storage. For the purposes of this standard, the classifications of
paper described in 20.4.10.1 through 20.4.10.4 shall apply and shall be used to determine the sprinkler
system design criteria in accordance with Chapters 20 through 25.
 20.4.10.1 Heavy weight Class: Heavyweight class shall be defined so as to include paperboard and paper
stock having a basis weight [weight per (93 m2)] of (9.1 kg).
 20.4.10.2 Medium weight Class: Medium weight class shall be defined so as to include all the broad range
of papers having a basis weight [weight per (93 m2)] of (4.5 kg to 9.1 kg).
 20.4.10.3 Light weight Class: Lightweight class shall be defined so as to include all papers having a basis
weight [weight per (93 m2)] of (4.5 kg).

20.5.5.1* Protection Criteria for Roll Paper Storage.

 20.5.5.3 Horizontal storage of heavyweight or mediumweight paper shall be protected as a closed array.
 20.5.5.4 Mediumweight paper shall be permitted to be protected as heavyweight paper where wrapped
completely on the sides and both ends, or where wrapped on the sides only with steel bands.
 20.5.5.5 Lightweight paper or tissue paper shall be permitted to be protected as mediumweight paper where
wrapped completely on the sides and both ends, or where wrapped on the sides only with steel bands.
Wrapping material shall be either a single layer of heavyweight paper with a basis weight of (18.1 kg) or two layers of
heavyweight paper with a basis weight of less than (18.1 kg).

 20.5.5.6 For purposes of sprinkler system design criteria, lightweight class paper shall be protected as
tissue.

21.7 Control Mode Density/Area Sprinkler Protection Criteria for Roll Paper Storage.

 21.7.1 Storage of heavyweight or mediumweight classes of rolled paper up to (3 m) in height shall be

protected by sprinklers designed for ordinary hazard Group 2 densities. ( OH2)
 21.7.2 Storage of tissue and lightweight classes of paper up to (3 m) in height shall be protected by
sprinklers in accordance with extra hazard Group 1 densities. (EH1)
 21.7.3 Sprinkler design criteria for storage of roll paper (3 m) high and higher in buildings or structures
with roof or ceilings up to (9.1 m) shall be in accordance with Table 21.7.3(a)
 21.7.4* High-temperature sprinklers shall be used for installations protecting roll paper stored (4.6 m) or
higher.
A.21.7.4 Generally, more sprinklers open in fires involving roll paper storage protected by sprinklers rated below the
high temperature range. An increase of 67 percent in the design area should be considered.
