INTRODUCTION

• Bharat Bijlee Transformer Division

(BBTD), inaugurated in 1954, has evolved
into a growth centre for the electrical
business.
• The company has two business segments:
Power Systemsand Industrial Systems
segment
• Company has a state-of-the-art plant with a
production capacity of 15,000 MVA and a
full-fledged testing laboratory that was
NABL accredited in 2014.

HISTORY OF COMPANY

 Bharat Bijlee Limited (BBL) originated from a

company founded in 1946 in Mumbai by Nikhil
Danani.
 Bharat Bijlee Transformer Division (BBTD),
inaugurated in 1954, has evolved into a growth
centre for the electrical business.

WORK AT BBL-
I was reporting at Bharat Bijlee Transformer Division (BBTD) department of Bharat
Bijlee Limited.

BBTD dept. is responsible for design of the products. They provide all the drawings,
release the component list and pass it to the engineering dept.
According to customer demand the products with different ratings is manufactured.

Winding Construction
Transformer windings are designed to
meet three fundamental requirements,
viz. mechanical, thermal and
electrical. They are cylindrical in
shape and are assembled
concentrically.
• Windings are made with great
care by well experienced skilled
workers in dust free &
temperature controlled
environment.

Department of EED 8
Core Assembly

• Core of the transformer is either in

square or rectangular in size.
• The transformer core is closed
magnetic circuit built up of thin
laminations of electrical sheet steel.
• The core limbs and yokes are built
up of separate laminations of
electrical sheet steel 0.35 or 0.5
mm thick.

Tapping &Tap Changer
• The purpose of a tap changer is to regulate the output voltage of a transformer.

Department of EED
Tank Construction

• Small capacity tanks are fabricated from sheet

steel while larger ones are assembled with
cast aluminium.
• For cooling purpose the tank is welded with
cooling tubes. These are some types of
transformer tanks.
• The transformer tank provides the
containment for the core and windings and
for the dielectric fluid.

Painting

The entire procedure of painting is done under two stages

1) Cleaning of tanks
• The cleaning of tank is done normally by chipping/grinding.
• The outside surface of the tank is short blasted to achieve a very fine and smooth finish

2) Painting of tanks
• After cleaning the tanks, a coat of hot oil resistence paint is applied on the internal
surface of the tank.
• The outside surface is painted with a coat of Red Oxide primer and subsequently with
one coat of enamel paint as per customer’s requirement.

Oil Filling and Filtration

Transformer oil filtering is an important process which eliminates solid particles, dissolved
gasses, and dissolved water. The electrical properties of the oil can be enhanced by filtering,
dehydration, and degassing. Oil Filtering keeps the transformer in good condition and
increases its life.

Department of EED 15
Testing
Before dispatch, each and every
transformer is subjected to all routine
tests as specified by IS/IEC/BS/ANSI
standards.
