INTRODUCTION

You have already learned that instructional materials

are facilities given to learners, so they can use every
opportunity to develop full potential. Teachers’ role is to
facilitate and motivate students in their learning process,
materials are also important for the development of the
lesson.
The realia is an increasing role in the learning strategies.
As a result, the teacher has to use actions, gestures, voices to
be a sufficient basis within the classroom activities.
IM’s assist to reinforce and
supplement the teacher’s
communication during the
presentation of the lesson via:

 * clarifying the concept or idea;

 making the communication more
explicit;
 * helping students to develop a good
understanding of the content or skill
taught;
 * learner can relate an idea to their
common reality or environment with the
use of aids.
Cunningsworth (1995) summarizes the role of materials,
particularly course books) in language teaching as a:

Dudley-Evans and St. John (1998) suggest that for teachers of ESP Courses,
materials serve the following functions:

STIMULATION
One cannot utilize instructional method
without using any form of media for

instructional materials play different roles in the

IMs are viewed as partners in teaching and

Assessing What You
Have Learned
 What guidelines should be
considered in the selection
and use of instructional
materials?
 What are the stated roles of
instructional materials?
 Do you think those roles are
still suited to the present
educational system we have,
having diverse learners?

Think of a suited role of
instructional material in your mode of
learning today. Enumerate five (5) roles
you think are applicable in you, especially
to the current situation we have.
