Chapter 16
Implementing Sustainability
Strategy

Session 24
A major challenge of manufacturing
enterprises is IMPLEMENTING the roadmap
for a sustainability/sustainable
development (S/SD) strategy.

Introducing the procedures of implementation is not a

simple task and requires confirmed steps.

These steps for the S/SD roadmap in manufacturing enterprises

are important not only to enable a quantitative estimate of the
strategy of S/SD but also to determine requirements for
components of these enterprises to survive.
The MAJOR OBJECTIVES for
road mapping a strategy
1. Analyze and collect data from the manufacturing enterprises
regarding understanding the strategic concepts and objectives of
sustainability.
2. Measure the level of awareness regarding S/SD.
3. Identify and assess the drivers and challenges of the manufacturing
enterprises in terms of the S/SD.
4. Classify and identify major types of performance indicators, applicable
aspects, and dimensions existing in manufacturing enterprises after
normalizing, weighting, and measuring their relevance.
5. Suggest the requirements of S/SD strategy components that could be
used to raise or update the sustainability indexes and optimize those
values.
6. Propose and present a framework to measure the performance
indicators of aspects/issues.
7. Measure the S/SD index based on micro-level performance indicators,
aspects/issues, and pillars/dimensions, and the company or
enterprise’s levels.

CONCLUSION

S/SD will be built throughout the work culture and

people will become knowledgeable, conscientious, and
motivated to implement sustainable practices.

Educating individuals and then implementing the

proposed roadmap of the S/SD strategy will reduce
employees’ resistance to change and increase the
concept of continuous improvement and
nonconventional performance measurement.
