WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL
Architect : Frank Gehry
Built in :1999-2003
Location : Los Angels,United States
Structural Engineer : John A. Martin & Associates, Inc.

CONCEPT:
• The forms are external inspired by a boat with sails drenched.
• The building is essentially a shell which consists of a series of interconnected volumes, some forms of orthogonal coated
stone and other forms of organic and surfaces covered with a corrugated metal skin of steel.
• The centerpiece of the interior of the building was designed to represent the hull of a boat.
STRUCTURE:
• To calculate the complex shapes of the curves of Walt Disney Concert Hall,Gehry with other structural associates used
a 4D programming software called ‘Catia’ wireframe computer model. This allowed us to determine the structure and
shape of each piece of steel that covers them.

MATERIALS:
• To coat the outer surfaces were used corrugated 12,500 pieces of steel together on the outside. No two equal parts, as
each piece takes a unique form of agreement to their location.
• In areas outside of regular forms, the stone was used. Glass surfaces function as a liaison between the various volumes.
• The interior of the auditorium and rooms, is lined with fir wood. Here it was used in floors, walls and ceilings.

STRUCTURE:
• The form was constructed using steel trusses and surfaces covered with corrugated metal skin of steel.
• The East and West walls of the Concert hall had to support a 15 degree lean of the south wall that required special erection
aids and heavy framing to sustain the weight.
• While the north wall, consisting of heavy box and built up wide flange members, cantilevers out 30 feet (9M).
• With that, concrete slabs were used to construct the flooring layers of the building and each slab varies between 15-45
inches (38-114 cm) in thickness.
• The resulting product of the design needed about 10,000 tons of structural steel and it was to built on top of a concrete
parking structure.
• Some of the largest trusses of the building will span over 140 feet
(42 M), connecting the east and west side box columns which
lean outward at 6 degrees of the concert hall.
• Some columns  on all four sides of the main hall box will be
leaning to support the architectural design. Some columns
leaned as far as 15 degrees. The stability of those columns comes
with the aid of special erection aids, heavy framing and bracing
side structures.
• We can see that the center is stable and is carrying more load of
the ceiling whereas the end trusses are not only putting strain on
the side walls, but is also pulling the walls in closer.
