Standardization in IOT
• Standardization is one of the most critical hurdles of the
IoT evaluation without global standards.
• The complexity of devices that need to connect and
communicate with each other(with all the associated
addressing , automation etc.)
• The IoT promises Billions of connecting of things which
in turn require common standards in order to operate with
an acceptable, manageable, Scalable level of complexity.
• Standardization Across the IoT landscape is important
because this reduces the gap between Protocol and
associated security holes and issues.
Protocol Standardization for IOT
• All the devices, applications and underlying
communication technology.
• An intelligent RFID
• A Sensor: Device that measure a physical
quantity and convert it into analog or digital
signal.
• An Actuator: A device that control the sets of
equipment such as control and modulates the
flow of gas.
• Any combination of above features to form a
more complexity entity.
SCADA & RFID Protocols:
• SCADA stands for Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition. SCADA
software system is a device monitoring and controlling framework.
The supervisory control includes, taking action and control through
remote locations for various control mechanisms and processes. The
front-end UI of Mobile App or Web dashboard along with backend
business logic, database and a Gateway (as depicted in the above
block diagram) manifests a SCADA solution for control and
monitoring of devices in an IoT network.

• RFID uses radio waves to transfer data form an electronic tag

attached to an object to a central system through a reader for the
purpose of identifying and tracking the object. First appeared in
1945.
Efforts on RFID & SCADA Protocols:

• Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition

• One of the IoT pillars to represent the whole
industrial automation arena
• IEEE created standard specification called Std.
C37.1™, for SCADA & automation systems in 2007
• In recent years, network-based industrial automation
has greatly evolved
• With the use of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs),
or IoT devices in our terms, in substations and power
stations
Issues in IoT Standardization

There are two issues for the IOT standardization

which are as follows :-
1. ICT standardization is highly decentralized activity.
How can the individual activities of the network of
extremely heterogeneous standards-setting bodies
be coordinated?
2. It will become essential to allow all interested
stakeholders to participate in the standardization
process towards the IOT and to voice their
respective requirements and concerns. How can this
be achieved?
Solutions for these issues
The only, or at least better, possible solution to address these
chaotic situations is to try to standardize the omnipresent
middleware and the XML-based data representation from
across-industry organization such as World Wide Web
Consortium(W3C), Organization for the advancement of
structured information standards (OASIS), and others.

OASIS and W3C are web–oriented standard organization.

Their expertise makes them capable of doing high-level,
segment–independent WOT standardization. They are
actually participant of ETSI/3GPP and others efforts, but they
are currently more like observers instead of active
participants.
UNIFIED
Unified Data Standards: Challenging
task:
1) Many standardization efforts have been
trying to define a unified data representation
and protocol for IOT.
2) Before the internet of things, the internet
was actually an internet of documents or of
multimedia documents. The two pillars of the
internet including HTML/HTTP turned the
internet into World Wide Web.
Evolution of web
Many standardization efforts have been trying to define
a unified data representation and protocol for IOT. This
is the right direction.
Unified Data Standard Approaches
However, when the WOT application prevail in
the future, globally unique identification of
objects becomes a serious issue. Object
identification can essentially encompass the
naming, addressing or both of an asset or device.
In the web, the identification of a resource that
represents some form of information has been
achieved by the development of universal
resource identifier(URI), which is a global
agreement on the identification of particular
resource based on specified schemes.
