ABSTRACT
• The main aim of our project is to build a wood grooving machine
in order to groove the wood by using the groove blade. A groove
is a long and narrow indentation built into a material, generally
for the purpose of allowing another material or part to move
within the groove and be guided by it. Here we have used a
motor to rotate the tool with the help of bearing. Metal sheet is
fixed at the below of tool. The wood is inserted between the
plate and the tool manually. The grooved wood can be taken out
at the opposite side of the machine. In this method we can
groove linearly. We can even change the tool for different
operations based on the applications.

Introduction

• Tongue and groove is a method of fitting similar objects together, edge to

edge, used mainly with wood, in flooring, parquetry, panelling, and similar
constructions. Tongue and groove joints allow two flat pieces to be joined
strongly together to make a single flat surface. Before plywoodbecame
common, tongue and groove boards were also used for sheathingbuildings
and to construct concrete formwork.
• Each piece has a slot (the groove) cut all along one edge, and a thin, deep
ridge (the tongue) on the opposite edge. The tongue projects a little less
than the depth of the groove. Two or more pieces thus fit together closely.
The joint is not normally glued, as shrinkage would then pull the tongue off.
To do this job efficiently will less human effort, our project work, wood
grooving machine will be apt and highly advantageous.

COMPONENTS AND DESCRIPTION

• The major components involved in the fabrication of the wood

grooving machine are as follows.
• • Motor,
• • Pulley,
• • Belt drive,
• • Groove tool,
• • Bearing with bearing cap,
• • Frame.

WORKING PRINCIPLE
In order to cut grooves in the wood, the power from the motor is drawing to the groove with the
help of a motor. The power transmission is done using pulley and the belt drive. In order to avoid
the slippage of the belt, V belts are preferred than the flat belts. First the roller with the tool
arrangement is connected via belt through pulley of 1:10 ratio. Hence the motor speed is reduced
by 10. The blade is fixed at the roller. When the motor is switched on, the roller will rotate and
therefore the tool will also be rotated along with the roller. The wood in which the grooving
operation must be done is placed in between the tool and the fixed plate such the tool cuts
grooves on the wood. Because of the roller motion, the wood automatically comes out on the
other side of the machine. Then the next set of wood is placed for next cycle of operation. By
simply changing the tool, hard materials can also be machined with this machine but the ultimate
aim of our project is to build a machine to perform wood grooving operation.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

• ADVANTAGES
• • Simple construction.
• • Cost is low.
• • Portable one and compact in size.
• • Essential for grooving in wood and hard materials can also be used.
• • Less number of moving parts.

• DISADVANTAGES
• • Skilled operators are needed for this operation.
• • Need maintenance.
• • Noise and vibrations are produced which may damage the eardrum.

CONCLUSION

• This project work has provided us an excellent opportunity and experience, to use our
limited knowledge. We gained a lot of practical knowledge regarding, planning,
purchasing, assembling and machining while doing this project work. We feel that the
project work is a good solution to bridge the gates between the institution and the
industries.
• We are proud that we have completed the work with the limited time successfully. The
“WOOD GROOVING MACHINE” system is working with satisfactory conditions. We can
able to understand the difficulties in maintaining the tolerances and also the quality. We
have done to our ability and skill making maximum use of available facilities.
• Thus we have developed a“WOOD GROOVING MACHINE” which helps to achieve the
time reduction in grooving operation and an efficient wood grooving method can be
achieved.By using more techniques, they can be modified and developed according to
the applications.
