DRUGS OF ABUSE

OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson the learners are expected
to:
• describe how drug of abuse are classified
• classify drugs of abuse according to their
effects on the body
• produce a table flipchart of the classification
of drugs and their effects on the body

DRUGS
• are any substances or chemicals
which when taken into the body
either though nasal, oral, and
transdermal way have psychological,
emotional and behavioral effects on a
person.
DRUGS OF ABUSE

• are drugs commonly abused by


users. In the Philippines the three
drugs of abuse: shabu, marijuana
and inhalants.
THREE CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS OF
ABUSE
1. methamphetamine hydrochloride or
“shabu”
 “poor man’s cocaine”
 It is a colorless crystal or crystalline
powder with a bitter taste. It can be
taken orally, sniffed or injected.
SHABU
2. Cannabis Sativa or “Marijuana”
 produces feeling of drunkenness. distorts
the senses of taste, touch, hearing and
smell.
 it increases heart rate, lowers body
temperature , and reduce blood sugar
levels.
MARIJUANA
3. Inhalants better known as “solvents”

 can cause an effect like drunkenness if


they are inhaled, can also produce a state
of intoxication that is characterized by
drowsiness, dizziness, a slurring of
speech, loss of consciousness and often
hallucination.

DRUGS
1. GATEWAY DRUGS
 such as cigarettes and alcohol are legal drugs
that a non-drug user might try, which can
lead him/her to more dangerous drugs such
as marijuana and shabu.

2. Depressant drugs
 It can slow down a person’s central nervous
system (CNS). The Central nervous system
includes the brain, spinal cord and nerves.
 Doctors commonly prescribe depressant drugs
to help certain persons to be less angry, less
stressed or tensed. Depressant drugs relax
muscles and nerves. These drugs also make
patients feel sleepy and light-headed.
Depressant drugs include alcohol, barbiturates
and tranquilizers.

irritation of the lining of
the mouth, esophagus and
stomach. Large amounts
of alcohol can irritate the
stomach enough to cause
nausea and vomiting.

ALCOHOL
 are drugs for inducing
sleep in persons with anxiety,
mental stress and insomnia.
This is also value in the
treatment of epilepsy and
hypertension.

or tablets and are taken orally
or injected.

BARBITURATES
 drugs that calm
and diminish anxiety.
They are used in
the treatment of
nervous states and
some mental
disorders without
producing sleep.
TRANQUILIZER
3. Stimulant drugs
• speed up a person's central nervous system.
• have the opposite effect of depressants
• make a person’s energy high. Negative effects
of stimulants include depression and tiredness.
• include amphetamines which include shabu,
caffeine, nicotine and cocaine.

 effects of cocaine include
change in mood, wide-awake
feelings, nervousness and loss
of appetite but last for a
shorter time.

4. Narcotics
 are drugs which relieve pain and induce
sleepiness.
 In medicine, these drugs are administered in
moderation to patients with mental disorders
and those in severe pain like cancer.
 include cocaine, heroin and marijuana.
COCAINE

powerful than morphine from
which it is derived and is the
most addicting opium
derivative. With continued
use, addiction occurs within
14 days.
It is may be sniffed or
swallowed but it is usually
injected in the veins.

HEROIN
 effects of heroin characterized
by analgesia, drowsiness, and
mood changes.
MARIJUANA
5. Hallucinogens
• are drugs which distorts reality and facts.
• It affects all senses and makes a user see, hear and
feel things that don’t exist in the time being.
 The name hallucinogen came from the word
hallucination which is to perceive illusions.
 include lysergic acid diethylamide, psilocybin
obtained from mushrooms and mescaline.
• users experience
physical changes ,
such as increase in
heart rate or a rise in LYSERGIC ACID

Chills, fever,
trembling, loss of
appetite and nausea
can also occur.
6. Inhalants
• are found in ordinary household chemical
products and anesthetics.
• Continuous use and abuse leads to delusions,
brain damage, liver damage, coma and death.
• Examples of household products used as
inhalants are acetone, rugby or solvent,
ordinary and spray paint, and cleaning fluids
ACTIVITY 2: RELAY GAME
• 1. I will divide you into four groups.
• 2. Each member will make a meta-card. Write on each meta-
card a class of drugs of abuse. Write legibly. There will be six
meta-cards per group.

• - Meta-card 2: DEPRESSANTS
• - Meta-card 3: STIMULANTS
• - Meta-card 4: NARCOTICS
• - Meta-card 5: HALLUCINOGENS
• - Meta-card 6: INHALANTS
• 3. Each group will form a line.
• 4. I will read a statement or phrase. If your meta-card
is being referred to, run to the front and raise the
meta-card up high.
• 5. I will check your answer and record the number of
correct answers garnered by the team.
• 6. Return to your line when cued by your teacher.

classified and how they affect the body.
Ask your teacher to check your draft.
Include pictures to make your flipchart
more attractive.
