• Express oneself more freely

2B OR NOT 2B?

• Article From a newspaper

• Discusses fears about texting
• Title taken from Shakespeare’s play (Hamlet)
• The author uses this title to get readers to think
about texting, whether it should exist now, and
whether it will exist in the future.

• Texting has been criticized as textese, slanguage, a

digital virus.

use, but it is not a disaster.

2B OR NOT 2B?

• Although many texters enjoy breaking linguistic

rules, they also know they need to be understood.
• Texting is used only in informal conversation e.g.
lol-laughing out loud, brb- be right back, btw- by

e.g. cmb- cll me back, IOU- I owe you etc.
• Modern kid’s lol & earlier generation’s asap
66
2B OR NOT 2B?

• English has had abbreviated words ever since it

began to be written down.
• The letters, symbols, and words are run together,
without spaces ( cul8r- See you later.)
• This is certainly unusual in the history of special
writing systems.
77
2B OR NOT 2B?

• Texters use deviant spellings- and they know they

are deviant. They are also a part English tradition.
• Saves time & energy
• Children quickly learn enjoyable things.
• The desire to be playful is there when we text, and
it is hugely powerful.
88
2B OR NOT 2B?

• It’s really fun to play with sounds, words,

grammar & spelling.
• Research shows literacy improves from texting
• Positive link between texting & the skills that are
needed for success in standard English in children
• Linguistically creative / language in evolution
