INTRODUCTION
Vibration is a continuous cyclic motion of a structure or a component.
Generally, engineers try to avoid
vibrations, because vibrations have a
number of unpleasant effects:

 Cyclic motion implies cyclic forces.

Cyclic forces are very damaging to
materials. (1)

 Even modest levels of vibration can

cause extreme discomfort;
 Vibrations generally lead to a loss of
precision in controlling machinery.

PARTICLE DAMPER
Particle damping is also referred to as acceleration
damping, multiple impact damping, multi-particle Multiple Mass
damping, granular damping, granular-fill damping,
and shot damping.
Particle damping is the use of particles moving freely
in a cavity to produce a damping effect.
Particle damping technology is a derivative of impact
damping.
Particle dampers show a huge potential to reduce

undesired vibrations in technical applications even under
harsh environmental conditions.

Impact damping refers to only a single
(somewhat larger) auxiliary mass in a cavity, Single Mass Multiple Mass
whereas particle damping is used to imply
multiple auxiliary masses of small size in a
cavity.
Particle damping is a form of an auxiliary-mass
type vibration damper, wherein multiple metal,
tungsten carbide, ceramic or other types of small
particles are placed within the cavities of the
vibrating structure.
 Particle dampers are also suitable for employment
in long-term harsh environments, such as high Fig. Impact Damper Fig. Particle Damper
temperature, severe cold, oil contamination, etc

Types of PD Based On Their Peculiarities
Single  the typical particle damper which has a single cavity and is externally attached
unit
to the main structure
Multi unit a particle damper which consists of more units attached to the main structure
damper which does not modify the geometry of the main structure and often

a traditional impact damper where the large single impacting mass is placed in a
FPID
cavity together with many smaller particles to increase energy dissipation. 7
Principle Of Particle Damper
 Particle dampers are devices that
work by a combination of impact and
friction damping.
 They dissipate the energy of a system
by transferring it to a bed of particles.
 This bed is geometrically constrained
to remain inside a container fixed to
the vibrating system.
 As such, the motion-caused
interaction occurring inside the
container damps the absorbed energy. Fig. A Typical Experimental Setup*
(*ref. Niklas Meyer & Robert Seifried Toward a design methodology for particle dampers by analyzing their energy dissipation. Computational Particle Mechanics)

CONTD…
The main dissipative mechanisms involved are
Principle:
1 Collisions Between The Container Walls and particles.
Principle:
2 Collisions Between The Particles Themselves.
Principle:
3 Sliding Friction Between The Same.
Principle:
4 Rolling Friction Between The Same.

Note: For collisions between the particles and the cavity walls to occur, both
should be out-of-phase with each other.

Case Study On Particle Damper
 Analytical and experimental studies on particle damper used for tremor suppression (By Zheng Lu &
Zhikuang Huang, Journal of Vibration and Control 2020, Vol. 0(0) 1–11)

Figure. Angular displacement of the upper limb pathological tremor  (Gillard et al., 2002).
12
CONTD…
A mechanical model of the particle damper for tremor suppression is established.
Its steady-state solutions are obtained and verified.
It is shown that increasing the particle mass leads to an increase of the particle
damper performance for tremor suppression, but it has an upper limit.
The relative error of peak acceleration between the experimental results and the
theoretical results is less than 11% in all cases.
The theoretical method presented in this study is not recommended for the cases
with very large or small gap clearance of the particle damper cavity.
In these cases, the assumption that the particles collide with the cavity walls twice
per cycle is not satisfied.
13
CONCLUSION
Particle damping technology has been widely used due to its:
1 Conceptual Simplicity

2 Moderate Cost

3 Good durability

4 Temperature insensitive
More Research is needed in particle Damper For civil

Engineering Structure.
Provided that the operating temperature is below the particles’ metal melting
point, it could maintain normal operation 14
