Agenda

• Double your reading speed

• Equal or improved comprehension
• 1 month - 30 minutes a day

1
Overview

• Preparations and first reading speed test

• Theory on reading speed and comprehension
• Exercises and exercise program

2
Preparations

• Relevant and non-technical books

• Biographies, fiction, textbooks, non-fiction
• Timer

3
Calculating Reading Speed

• Find your reading speed

• Get an indication of comprehension

4
Calculating Reading Speed

1. Find one of your selected books

2. Make a mark where you start
3. Set the timer for 3 minutes and start
4. Mark where you stop
5. Write a 1-3 sentence summary

5
Calculating Reading Speed

1. Number of lines read:

2. Average number of words per line:

3. Number of words read:

4. Words per minute:

6
Important to Know

• Never read without a purpose

• Practice speed and comprehension independently
• Consider checking your eyes

7
Important to Know

Recall to remember

8
Important to Know

Reading fast is mostly a physical skill

9
Important to Know

Comprehension is mostly a mental skill

10
Important to Know

Def. efficient:
Performing or functioning in the best possible manner
with the least waste of time and effort.

11
Defocused Eyes

Def fixation:
Gaze maintained in constant direction

12
Defocused Eyes

• Take in more than one word per fixation

• Use pen/finger tricks
• A stepping stone to advanced reading patterns

13
Defocused Eyes

When you try to glide your eyes over the

page you are actually stopping and fixating on
many points along the line. There is usually a
big overlap between what these fixations can
take in, making it very inefficient.

14
Subvocalization

• 200 words per minute barrier

• The four ways of reading:
1. Reading out loud
2. Sub vocalizing
3. Auditory reading
4. Visual reading
• High speed naturally eliminates subvocalization

15
Using a Metronome

• Calculate desired metronome speed:

1. Number of fixations per line = #F
2. Number of words per line = #W

3. Number of words per fixation =

4. Metronome Speed =

5. Example:

16
Eliminating Regressions

• Conscious regressions
• Going back to increase understanding
• Inefficient for increasing comprehension
• Can be a big problem

17
Eliminating Regressions

• Unconscious regressions
• Bad reading habits
• Low concentration
• Build new habits

18
Physical Conditions

• Temperature (~20 degrees C)

• Prop up your book
• Adequate sleep/rest

19
Comprehension

• Remembering = Retention
• Understanding = Comprehension
• To remember better:
• Use higher levels of thinking
• Use Optimal Learning Techniques
• Develop your comprehension intuition

20
What Affects Comprehension

• Relevancy matters
• Use flow triggers
• Reading faster
• Concentration
• Prior knowledge
• Subject difficulty
• Language complexity
• Number of ideas presented
• Read with a specific purpose
21
Paragraph Topic

• Usually one topic per paragraph

• Usually the first sentence presents it
• Subsequent sentences expand on topic

22
Sentence Levels

• Topic sentence - level 1

• Explains more about topic - level 2
• Expands on preceding sentence - level 2, 3...
