INTRODUCTION

• Contactless energy transfer is the

transmission of electrical energy from a power
source to an electrical load without artificial
interconnecting conductors . Wireless
transmission is useful in cases where
interconnecting wires are inconvenient,
hazardous, or impossible. The problem of
wireless power transmission differs from that
of wireless telecommunications , such as radio.
[3]
• In the latter, the proportion of energy received
becomes critical only if it is too low for the
signal to be distinguished from the background
noise.[1] With wireless power, efficiency is the
more significant parameter.  A large part of the
energy sent out by the generating plant must
arrive at the receiver or receivers to make the
system economical.

Traditional Method Of Power Transmission

[5]
Need For Wireless System Of Energy Transmission

• To minimize losses due to resistance of wire

• To make the system more efficient about
90-94%
• To eliminate inefficient & costly cables,
towers & substations
• To import & export electrical power
internationally

[6]
Advanced Technology Of Transmission
• Different Theories proposed are:
i) Transmission through or along the Earth
ii) Propagation as a result of Terrestrial
Resonance
iii) Coupling to the Ionosphere using
propagation through electrified gases
• First theory given by:Fritz Lowenstein
• Later two : Dr. Nikola Tesla

Coupling to the Ionosphere using propagation
through electrified gases

Transmission Through A Partially Evacuated Glass Tube

[8]
Observation by Dr. Tesla:
 Air under a partial evacuated vacuum can
conduct high current better than Copper wires.
 If transmitter is elevated to a level where air
pressure is about 75 to 130mm & an excitation
of Mega volts is applied, then the air will serve
as a conductor for production of current.
 The current can also be transmitted through air.

Propagation as a result of Terrestrial Resonance
SCHUMANN CAVITY RESONANCE
• Earth behaves like an electric circuit & atmosphere
acts like a weak conductor.
• If there were no sources of charge, the existing
electric charge would diffuse away in about 10
minutes.
• There is a cavity defined by the surface of the Earth
& the inner edge of the ionosphere 55 Kms up.At any
moment the total charge residing in this cavity is
500,000Coulombs.

Practical Demonstration of Wireless Transmission

Skillet of First Tesla plant constructed for Transmission of Energy

[11]
About the Plant:
• Has a full size,51feet diameter,air core,RF
resonating coil which is the largest part of the
system.
• 130feet tower,insulated 30feet above ground.
• Has a capacity of over 600 Kilowatts.

[12]
APPLICATIONS
 Cell phones, game controllers, laptop
computers, mobile robots, even electric
vehicles capable of re-charging themselves
without ever being plugged in. Flat screen
TV’s and digital picture frames that hang on
the wall—without requiring a wire and plug
for power. Industrial systems and medical
devices made more reliable by eliminating
trouble prone wiring and replaceable batteries.

[13]
• WiTricity Corp. is working to make this future
a reality, developing wireless electricity
technology that will operate safely and
efficiently over distances ranging from
centimeters to several meters—and will
deliver power ranging from milliwatts to
kilowatts.
