What is Progressivism?
 A theory of education that is concerned with
“learning by doing” that children learn best
when pursuing their own interest and satisfying
their own needs.
(Foundation of American Education)
 It focuses on focuses on real-world problem solving
and individual development.
 It was establish in America from the mid 20s through
the mid 50s. John Dewey was its proponent.

Note: it is the application of philosophy called pragmatism


which is based on testing in order to determine the merits
that an idea has. Ideas are tested through active
experimentation

being taught)

 A speculative view of knowledge (knowledge is never static).

 Natural learning processes and stages of development.

 Sensitivity to the interest, rhythms, and styles of learning of


individual learners.

 The learner as a whole person.

 The social nature of the learner and development of healthy


relationship with others in the classroom community.

 The teacher is a guide for problem solving and


scientific inquiry. That is?

 “progressivist” teachers have to motivate students to


learn through experience and active experimentation
develop to their higher level thinking skills.

 They have to enhance problem solving rather than


memorisation.

Note: learner’s brains develop – learners becomes


easier.
