NETWORK

TOPOLOGY
What is a
Topology?
The arrangement of network which
consists of nodes and connecting lines
via sender and receiver is referred as
Network Topology.
Types of Network Topology:-
 MESH TOPOLOGY
 STAR TOPOLOGY
 BUS TOPOLOGY
 RING TOPOLOGY
 TREE TOPOLOGY
 HYBRID TOPOLOGY
MESH TOPOLOGY

In this topology , every device is connected to another device via particular

channels known as links. There are two types of Mesh topologies :

Full
1. Mesh Topology :- It occurs when every node has a circuit connecting it to every other
node in a network.

2.Partial Mesh Topology :- In this some nodes are organised in a full mesh scheme but others are
only connected to one or two in the network.
MESH TOPOLOGY :
Advantages of Mesh
Topology:-
It is robust
Provides security and
privacy
Data is reliable
Fault is diagnosed easily
Disadvantages of Mesh
Topology:-
Installation and
configuration is difficult
High maintenance cost
Cost of cables are high as
bulk wiring is required
STAR TOPOLOGY
 InStar Topology , all the devices are
connected to a single hub through a
cable . This hub is the central node and
all other nodes are connected to the
central node.

 The Star Topology reduces the chance

of network failure by connecting all
system to a central node.
STAR TOPOLOGY :
Advantages of Star
Topology:-
Easy to detect fault
It is easy to set up
Easy to manage and
expand
Disadvantages of Star
Topology:-
Cost of installation is high
Performance is based on
single concentrator i.e hub
If the hub on which the
whole topology relies fails , the
BUS TOPOLOGY
In this topology every
computer and network devices
are connected to a single
cable. It transmits the data
from one end to another in
single direction.

It has no bi-directional feature.

BUS TOPOLOGY :
Advantages of Bus
Topology:-
Cost of cable is less as
compared to other
topology , but it is used to
built small networks
It is easy to handle and
Disadvantages of Bus
Topology:-
If the common cables fails
, whole system will crash
down
If the network traffic is
heavy , it increases
RING TOPOLOGY
 In this topology , it forms a ring
connecting a device with its
exactly two neighbouring devices.
 Data travels from node to node ,
with each node along the way
handling every packet.
 All messages travels through a
ring in the same direction.
RING TOPOLOGY :
Advantages of Ring
Topology:-
• Cheap to install and expand
• The possibility of collision is
minimum in this topology
• Good communication over long
distances
• Handles high volume of traffic
Disadvantages of Ring
Topology:-
• Troubleshooting is difficult in
this topology
• Addition and removal of
stations in between can disturb
the whole topology
• The failure of the single node
TREE TOPOLOGY
 It is the variation of star topology.
It has hierarchical flow of data.
 In this the various secondary hubs
are connected to the central hub
which contains the repeater.
 In this the data flow from top to
bottom i.e from the central hub to
the secondary and then to the
devices or from bottom to top i.e
devices to secondary hub and
then to central hub.
TREE TOPOLOGY :
Advantages of Tree
Topology:-
Each segment receives point-
to-point wiring
Error can be easily detected
and corrected
It allows more devices to be
attached to a single central
Disadvantages of Tree
Topology:-
The cost is high because
of cabling
If the central hub gets fail
, the entire system will
crash down
HYBRID TOPOLOGY
Hybrid
 Topology is a collection of two or more
topologies. It is a scalable topology which can be
expanded easily.
There are two types of Hybrid topologies:

1.Star-Ring Hybrid Topology:- It is a combination of Star Topology

and Ring Topology. Two or more star topologies are
connected together through a ring topology.
2.Star-Bus Hybrid Topology:- It is a combination of star topology
and bus topology. Two or more star topologies are
connected together through a bus topology.
HYBRID TOPOLOGY :
Advantages of Hybrid Topology:
It
 can be easily expanded
It is very reliable

It is extremely flexible

Disadvantages of Hybrid Topology:
The
 network hubs are costly to purchase and
maintain
Its not easy to design this type of architecture
