" THE MOST
IMPORTANT THING
IN COMMUNICATION
IS TO HEAR WHAT
ISN'T BEING SAID.

- Peter Drucker
What is Body Language?

 Body Language is a non-verbal communication

involving body movement.

 People in the workplace convey a great deal of

information without even speaking - through
"Gesturing", posture , expressions, etc.
Body Language includes the gestures, postures,
movements and expression that a person use
to communicate.

7 % Verbal (conveyed through words)

38 % Vocal (intonation, pitch, pauses,

etc)

58% Non-Verbal (body language)

Why is Body Language so important?

1. People remember of what they see than what they

hear.

2. long after a meeting, we are likely to have forgotten

the exact words someone used, but we may retain a
vivid image of the same person's facial expression.
what we are trying to deliver through verbal means
might not be exactly similar to what we are delivering
from our non-verbal means.
Kinesics
 It is the study of body movements to judge the inner
state of emotion expressed through different parts
of the body.

Expressions Interpretation

 sideways glance Suspicion

 steady eye contact Active listener
 no eye contact Disinterest
 veiled eyes Boredom
" A bad mood shuts
down the brain's
activity and we stop
listening ".
- Dr Helgo Schomer,
behavioural psychologist
What is mood?

 a temporary state of mind or feeling.

 A mood is less specific than an emotion or feeling, less

intense and less likely to be triggered by a particular
action or event. Moods can be described as being either
positive or negative.
Dr. Helgo Schomer

 A behavioural psychologist

 emotions and moods can influence a person's

behaviour.

 He says being in a negative psychological state causes

people not to function at their best.
Why mood is so important?

 Your mood has a severe impact on the decisions you make

on a daily basis.

 It is important to be able to control one's mood, because

emotions can cloud a person's judgment and have the
ability to affect logical reasoning.
Types of mood
 Positive Mood (Good mood) can be caused by many
different aspects of life as well as have certain
effects on people as a whole. Good mood is usually
considered a state without an identified cause;
people cannot pinpoint exactly why they are in a
good mood. People seem to experience a positive
mood when they have a clean slate, have had a good
night sleep, and feel no sense of stress in their life.
Negative Mood (Bad Mood) Like positive moods, negative
moods have important implications for human mental and
physical wellbeing.
- Can be both a consequence of chronic unresolved stress
and a behavioral way of influencing those around us.
Because of the complicated nature of these feelings,
professional help may be needed. This is particularly true
if you experience prolonged periods of depression,
sadness, or hopelessness.
Moods to strive for : Moods that should be
avoided :
1.Frustration
1. Joy
2. Anger
2. Love
3. Sadness
3. Empathy
4. Fear
4. Pride
5. Worry
Dr Schomer says people must identify the things that
induce positive and more desirable emotions, in order to
help influence their mood.
