Look at the picture. Vani is setting up a solar panel at the yard to supply electricity at her house. Gino is noticing
what she is doing and offering help. How would Gio offer help? How would Vani probably respond to it? Then, Gio
suggests she make more solar panels and she accepts his suggestion. How could Gio suggest? How would Vani
probably respond to it?
In this chapter, you will learn about how to suggest and offer. Please understand the expressions, practice the
dialogs, and speak English frequently to improve your speaking skills.
Activity 1

Gio : Hi, Vani.
Vani : Hi, Gio.
Gio : What are you doing?
Vani : I am setting up a solar panel
Gio : Let me help you
Vani : Sure, thanks
Gio : No big deal. Anyway, did you make it yourself?
Vani : yes, I did
Gio : That’s cool!!
Vani : Thanks, but I am still in the learning process. It can only supply low electricity
Gio : Why don’t you make more solar panels to supply electricity at your house?
Vani : That’s what I’m going to do, but it must be costly
Gio : I suggest you tell your parents or the local government about it. I believe they will support you.
Vani : Good idea !
Suggesting
Suggesting means we propose an idea, plan, or action for a person’s consideration. When we suggest pthers, it can be
giving a solution, advice, plan, or idea. The person can accept the suggestion or refuse it.
The social function suggest is to facilitate interpersonal communication. We suggest others to show our respect to
him/her.
The following are expressions to suggest and suitable responses.

Accepting

Grammar
Subjunctives
A subjunctives is sued in a noun clause which follows certain verbs and expressions. The subjunctive is used in its simple
from only ( “be” or “verb base”). It doesn’t have present, past, or future forms. The negative from of subjunctives is “not +
simple form”.
The following are certain verbs and expressions followed by subjunctives.

Notes:
• Suggest 1. The words “suggest”. “recommend”, “advise”, “propose’’ can be used to
• Insist suggest. When we suggest a person di an action, we can use a “that-clause”.
• Recommend In informal situations, “that” is often I left out.

Offering Items or Services/Help
Pay attention to the dialog in activity 3. Riska askas, “Would you like any help?” to offer Angga help. Angga replies “Sure,
Thank you” to accept the offer
Offering means to give help, itmes, information, solution, or friendship to a person. It can be accepted or refused.
The social function of offering is to facilitate interpersonal communication. We offer help or items to other to show our care or
as part of our duties., for example, a bank or hotel customer service respresentative always offers help at the beginning of the
conversation with customers or guests.
The following are expressions to offer and the responses.

• Would you like a loaf of bread? • No, thanks. I’m full

• Let me give you a ride. • Thank you for yr offer. My mom is on her way to teach me.
