CHALLENGE :
 The objective of the analysis is to check the flange leakage and Calculate Pressure equivalent
and comparing it with Pressure Allowable by DNV Method

 Formula used:

􀀷􀀩 􀁆􀀍􀀖 􀀏 􀀌
􀀷􀀩 􀁔 􀀌􀁠􀀷􀁅􀁠 􀀏 􀀷􀁆􀀍􀀖 􀀏 􀀌􀀖􀀷􀁘􀀍􀀖
Where P = Design pressure (bar)
F = axial force(N)
G =diameter at location of gasket load reaction =(Gasket OD+ID)/2 when bo<=6 mm
=(Gasket OD-2b) when bo>6 mm. Here bo=basic gasket seating
width as given in table 2-5.2 of ASME sec VIII
M = Bending moment
Mo = Out plane bending moment
Mi = Inplane bending moment
where Fm factor can be taken from the following table
IMPORTANCE :
Flange leakage is a serious problem in the Piping Industry. It has a tremendous potential to cause a severe
hazard in plants. Hence, the possibility of leakage needs to be investigated during the design stage to
reduce leakage possibility during operation.

Flange Analysis Methodology

Three widely used methods are practiced in the prevalent Process or
Power Piping Industry. These are

1)Pressure Equivalent method based on ASME B 16.5 pressure

temperature table and
2)ASME BPVC Sec VIII Div 1 Appendix 2 method/Code case method
4)DNV method
3)NC 3658.3 method
Input given:
Design code - ASME B 31.3
pipe OD - 219.1 mm
wall thickness - 6 mm
Flange class - 300#
Flange code - ASME B16.5
material of pipe - A106 G B
Tempreture - 200 C
Pressure - 20 bar
Ambiant temp - -20 C

SOLUTION :

Peq = PD + 4F/𝜋G2 + 16M/𝜋G3 < 1.3 Prating

G = 248.55 mm
F = Px A
A = 𝜋 (D02-Di2)/4
= 3.142 x (219.122- 207.12)/4
= 4023.7 mm2
P= 2 N/mm2 Axial Force

N=-12.1x10e-6x(200+20)x2.1x4023.7+(2x0.07x3.142x2x(219.1-2x6)2/4)
N=9409.6 Newton

M = 7137 N-m = 7137 x 103 N-mm

Peq = 2 + 4x-9409.6/(𝜋x 248.552)+ 16x7137x 103/(𝜋x248.553)
= 4.17 N/mm2 < 1.3 Prating Prating obtained from ASME B16.5 standard for
300# rating is 43.8 bar
Peq = 4.17 < 5.69 N/mm2 So it is safe Flange will not leake
RESULTS :
CONCLUSION :
we concluded that Calculate pressure Peq is less than the allowed pressure on the rating table corresponding to
the associated temperature therefore flange will not leak.
