Introduction - Pipe Supports:
• Expert opinion says that among all piping design issues 20% issues are directly related support
design and the other 20% are indirectly related. So overall 40% of the problems in the piping
design are related to pipe support
• Hence pipe support design is one of the most important aspects of piping design and should be
considered as an integral part of it.
• Pipe supports have to accommodate weight of piping and control various Loads and
movements of pipe
• Spring hangers or pipe hangers are very useful piping supports for Critical piping systems.
Types of Supports :
• Load bearing and hanger supports :
Takes Weight
• Restraints :
restrict the movements due to thermal and dynamic loads acting in the piping system
 Guide
restricts lateral and vertical movements and allows axial movements,
 line stops (or axial stops)
restricts axial and vertical movements and allows lateral movements.
 Anchors
support prevents all movements in all directions.
 Vibration absorbers
restrict the movements due to vibration caused by wind, earthquake, fluid flow and other dynamic loadings
Like Snubbers, Sway braces, Hold Down

Requirement of spring hanger support :
Common cases which require spring hanger application :
 Lines connected to extremly high or Low Temperature equipment as pressure vessel,
Heat exchanger, Column etc
 Lines connected to extremly high or low temperature rotating equipment as pumps,
compressors , turbines etc
 Lines connected to fired Heaters

Functions of a Spring Hanger Pipe Support :

 To provide necessary weight support to balance the piping system during the complete
operating cycle.
 To permit the operational movement of the pipe as it goes from cold to hot or vice versa.
 It does not cause excessive expansion stresses in the pipe as the spring load changes from cold
to hot or vice versa.
 Sometimes, Spring hangers can be used to dampen vibration as well.
Types of Spring Supports :
There are two types of spring hanger supports available in the market; Variable Spring Hanger and
Constant Spring Hanger.
Variable spring support Constant spring support
Variable Hanger Terminologies :
Cold Load
Hot Load
Differential Load
HL-CL = Spring siffeness x vert. Movment
Spring Variation
Variation = (HL – CL) / HL < 25 %,
Variation = Spring rate x thermal displacement /
HL < 25 %
How to select a Spring Hanger-Cold Load design
1. Calculate Cold Load
A Rigid restraint (V-stop) replaces the hanger for the gravity (GR) load case and Anchor releases are applied. The calculated support
reaction is cold load to be carried by hanger.
2. Calculate vertical thermal displacement Rigid Restraint is now removed for thermal load cases and no anchors are released. the
magnitude of vertical thermal displacement is the free travel displacement
3. From spring Catalog find out the size of the spring based on cold load.
4. Select the spring with high stiffness value (K) and calculate the hot load.
a. Hot load= cold load - K × Vertical displacement.(if displacement is +ve)
or
b. Hot load= cold load +K × Vertical displacement.(if displacement is -ve)
5. Check the value of the hot load so that it is coming under same size of spring selected, if not select the next soft spring (less stiffness).

6. Calculate
% variation = Difference in cold load and hot load < 25
Hot loads

if this condition is not satisfied, select the next soft spring (less stiffness).
If we are not able to satisfy to conditions 5 and 6 with most soft spring, we have to select constant spring hanger.

CALCULATION :
CALCULATION :
Cold Load = 2170 N
Vertical movement = 12.7 mm
HL =CL - Spring siffeness x vert. Movment (-ve displacement)
“k” value Spring stiffeness from ANVIL Table
k= 29.996 N/mm
HL= 2170 - 29.996 x 12.7
HL = 1790 N

% variation = Difference in cold load and hot load < 25

Hot loads
= 2170 - 1790/1790
= 17.5 % < 25 So Design is safe
Hot Load v/s Cold design

Loads of a spring hanger change throughout the operating cycle. By setting the pre-operation
cold condition load at a certain level, we can predict the load at operating conditions based on
the expected vertical displacement. And load variation is calculated as spring rate times the
vertical displacement.

The load that balances the weight of the portion of the supported piping is called the balanced
load
