IMPULSE MOMENTUM

THEOREM
CONCEPT OF MOMENTUM
•
•Formula: I = p – po
Wherein it was derived from: F=ma:
F = m()
=
F T = mv – mvo
DEFINITION AND IMPORTANT
WORDS TO KNOW!
• Impulses – product of force and the time interval on which the force acts on an
object. Is a vector quantity with the same direction as the force. Its SI unit is
newton x second or simply (N*s).

• Momentum – is the product of mass and velocity. It is a vector quantity, having

the same direction as the velocity. Is usually represented by small letter p. Its SI
unit is Kg*m/s. If v is the final velocity then mv is the final momentum. If vo is
the initial velocity, mvo is the initial momentum.
SAMPLE PROBLEM

•An object experiences a change

of momentum of 54 kg*m/s in 9s.
What is the force causing this
change?
SOLUTION
•
