as an Interaction of
many Factors
Albert Bandura
Hedefined personality as the interaction of
many factors that affect a person, his behavior,
and his environment.
He sees human agency or the capacity of
humans to exercise control over their own lives
as the essence of humanness.
Hebelieves that people are self- regulating,
proactive, self-reflecting and self-organizing.
Triadic Reciprocal Causation
Human Action is a result of the interplay of the
three variables:
(P) Person, includes cognitive, affective and
biological factors,
(B) Behavior
(E) Environment
Itis important to note that the contribution of
each variable depend of the level of agentic
resources available with the person, activities,
and situational circumstances.
People’s ability control their lives
is affected by their “self-
efficacy” or the belief that they
can succeed in what they want to
do.
Self-Efficacy:
How effective do I see
myself to be?
Bandura’s theory of personality
views the person as an agent of his
own change.
A person gains control over outside
factors by altering the way one
perceivers one’s situation.
Type A vs. Type B Personality
B.F. Skinner on
Personality as the
Product of the
Environment.
Behavioral theories posit that people are
born with “tabula rasa” or blank slate.
Skinner, the major behavioral psychologist
claimed that one is the sum total of
behaviors that were rewarded by one’s
environment and hence were developed
more through repletion and
reinforcement(reward).
Bandura, however, modified the
learning view by stating that one
learns also through modeling where
people one looked up to can
influence one’s identity, beliefs, and
values.
Research shows that people who believe in their
capacity to excel perform better. People with
high-efficacy view challenges as an opportunity.
Onthe other hand, people with weak-efficacy
don’t believe in their ability to succeed.
Sohow one sees oneself! What one believes one
can and can’t do matters!
If one wants to be a healthy
human being, one must pay
attention to one’s whole person.
