FOREST MAN OF INDIA

BACKGROUND
• Jadav "Molai" Payeng (born 1963) is an environment
activist and forestry worker from Majoli.
• He was born in a indegeneous missing tribes of
Assam
• He was honoured with Padam shri award for
establishing forest and tooking a step forward
towards nature
• He has established a forest in a huge ares of 550
hectares.
BUILDING UP THE MOMENT
• In 1979, Payeng, then 16, encountered a large
number of snakes that had died due to excessive
heat after floods washed them onto the tree-less
sandbar.
• Then he planted around 20 bamboo seedlings on the
sandbar.
•  Social forestry division of Gola ghat district launched
a scheme of tree plantation on 200 hectares at Aruna
Chapori situated at a distance of 5 km from
Kokilamukh in Jorhat district.
• Jadav was working as a labourer in that
project .
• After the completion of that project he cont.
taking care of the forest and trees.
• He got motivated from that project and
continued planting more and more trees.
• His efforts turned that bare land into a forest,
which came to be known as Molai forest, now
houses Bengal Tigers, Indian rhinocer, and
over 100 deer and rabbits.
HONOURS AND ACHIVEMENTS
•  In the month of October 2013, he was
honoured at the 
Indian Institute of Forest Management during
their annual event Coalescence.
• In 2015, he was honoured with Padma Shri, the
fourth highest civilian award in India.
• He received honorary doctorate degree from 
Assam Agricultural University and Kaziranga
University for his contributions.
