FAUNA

• There are more than 2000 species of fauna that can be


found in Tamil Nadu. This rich wildlife is attributed to the
diverse relief features as well as favorable climate and
vegetation in the Indian state.Recognizing the state's role in
preserving the current environment, the state government
has established several wildlife and bird sanctuaries as well
as national parks, which entail stringent protective
measures. Tamil Nadu is also included in the International
Network of Biosphere Reserves, which facilitates
international recognition and additional funding. There are
five national parks and 17 sanctuaries that serve as homes
to the wildlife.
JAMMU & KASHMIR

FAUNA
IMPORTANT FAUNA OF
KASHMIR
HANGUL:
•Known as Kashmiri Stag or Kashmiri Red Deer.
•Found in Dachigam National Park.

MUSK DEER:
• They are generally hunted for their scented glands, which are commonly used in
Perfumes.
•Commonly found in kishtwar National Park. 

MARKHOR:
•National Animal of Pakistan.It is known as Screw Horn or Screw Horned Goat.
•Pir Panjal Markhor is the Largest wild goat in the world.
• Commonly sighted in Limber , Lachipora and Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary
IBEX:

• Ibex are very nimble. They can Jump more than 6 feet.
• Sighted at kanji Wildlife Sanctuary And Hemis and Kishtwar National Park.
• Breeding Period for Ibex is known as Rut.
SNOW LEOPORD:

• Also known as OUNCE.


• The tail is very thick due to fat storage. It act as a blanket to protect its face when
asleep.
BLACK NECKED CRANE:

• Found in and remote parts of India. Tibetian plateau. 


•  Regularly seen in Tso – moriri Lake ,Ladakh.
•  Known as Tibetan Crane.
HIMALAYAN TAHR: 

• Natural enemies are Snow leopord. 


• Ocassionally  found in Kishtwar National Park , Jammu.
TAMILNADU

FAUNA
IMPORTAN FAUNA OF TAMILNADU
NILGIRI TAHR:

• It is the state animal of tamil nadu


• It is the only species in the genus Nilgiritragus.
LION-TAILED MACAQUE:

• The lion-tailed macaque is also called Wanderoo


• Is an old world monkey endemic to the Western Ghats of South
India.
BENGAL TIGER:

• It ranks among the biggest wild cats alive today.


• It is considered to belong to the world’s Charismatic megafauna.
ASIAN ELEPANT
• The Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), also known as the Asiatic
elephant, is the only living spieces of the genus Elaphas and is
distributed throughout the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia,
from India in the west, Nepal in the north, Sumatra in the south, and
to borneo in the east. 
SLOTH BEAR
• Sloth bears have shaggy, dusty-black coats; pale, short-haired
muzzles; and long, curved claws which they use to excavate termites
and ants. A cream-colored “V” or “Y” shape usually marks their
chests. Their shaggy fur does not have an undercoat, so it keeps them
relatively cool in their native, warm climate and protects them from
tropical insects. 
WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES AND
BIRD SANCTUARIES
• 5 National Parks , 4 Tiger Reserves, 15 Wildlife
sanctuaries,2 conservation reserves and 15 bird sanctuaries
which are rooted and built under the Wildlife (Protection)
Act, 1972. When we talk of the National Parks .The first
one out of them was formed in the year 1976 namely
Guindy National Park, followed by Gulf of Mannar Marine
National Park, Indira Gandhi National Park, Mudumalai
National Park and the last one formed in 1990 named
Mukurthi National Park.Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary,
Mudumalai Sanctuary,Vettangudi Bird
Sanctuary,Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary, Point Calimere
Sanctuary and many more.
