We use the past simple

An action that happened or a state that existed at a specific time in the past. Yesterday I felt so tired I didn’t go to
work.

We use the past continuous

● An activity that started before and continued until an event in the past. She was driving when the police

(I was cooking and I continued cooking after I had heard the news).
● A situation that was temporary in the past. I was staying with my aunt while my parents were away.

Compare the use of the past simple when the situation in the past was more permanent: I lived in Rome

The subject of a passive sentence is the object of the related active sentence.

Passive verbs are formed by using the appropriate tense of the verb `be`
followed by the past participle of the main verb.
