ADVERBS MODIFY VERBS AND


ADJECTIVES AND SOMETIMES OTHER
ADVERBS, BUT THEY NEVER MODIFY
NOUNS. 
Adverbs of manner tell us how
the action is done. They answer
the question how. Most
ADVERBS adverbs of manner are formed
OF by adding –ly to adjectives. 
• He spoke clearly.
MANNER • She draws beautifully.
• The old man walks slowly. 
Some more adverbs of manner
– silently, quickly and fairly.
Adverbs of time tell us when
the action happened or will
ADVERB happen. They answer the
question when. 
S OF • On that day,  James arrived
late.
TIME • I went for a walk yesterday. 
Some more adverbs of time –
tomorrow, today, long ago and
soon.
Adverbs of place tell us where
the action happened or will
ADVERBS happen. They answer the
question where.
OF PLACE • Come here 
• The dog ran away.
Some more adverbs of place-
there, everywhere, somewhere,
around, inside and outside.
Adverbs of frequency tell us
ADVERBS how often the action happens
or will happen. They answer
OF the question how often.
FREQUENCY • Sheila goes for a walk every
day.
  Some more adverbs of
frequency – always, seldom,
often, never, once and twice.
Adverbs of degree are used for
ADVERBS emphasising or to lay stress on
something . They answer the
OF question how much.
DEGREE • Julie works very hard. 
Some more adverbs of degree –
quite and much.
Interrogative adverbs are used
INTERRO to ask questions.
