What is sustainability?

Sustainability has been defined as:


-”The capacity developed by the human system for
satisfying the needs of current generations without
compromising the resources and opportunities for the
growth and development of future generations.”

Sustainability is a term related to the action of men in


relation to its environment.
In relation to the economy and ecology, sustainable is
something that can be mantained through time without
using up its resources or affecting the environment.

From an economic point of view, sustainability is the


integration of:
environmental,
social
 and economic issues
in the business decisions with the purpose of
assuring the future of a company.”

What can be made for the Company, the Environment and


the Society? United Nations Sustainable Development
Goals. They are 17 goals in order to transform the world.

History of sustainability
-1972 United Nations Conference of Human Environment,
for the first time they looked for common relations between
environmental aspects and economic topics related to
capital, growth and employment.

-1983 the United Nations Organization (ONU) creates the


World Commission on Environment and Development
(WCED).

Sustainability - 1984 Commission’s first meeting, with the objective of
creating a global agenda for change.
- For the first time they identified the importance of evaluating
every action or initiative from three approaches: economic,
environmental and social.
- It also focused the attention on energy topics, stating that
the energetic structure of the 21st century must be based on
renewable sources.

- 1987 The WCED elaborated the document “Our Common


Future”.
- This report makes an URGENT CALL that it is time to adopt
the DECISIONS THAT LET US GRANT THE RESOURCES
for sustaining this and future generations.

- June 1992 It’s held in Rio de Janeiro the United Nations


Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED),
or “Earth Summit”, to consolidate the UN actions
towards Environment and Sustainable Development
concepts.

They reached an agreement in the World Program known


as 21 Diary (Agenda 21), consistent of 27 principles
related with Sustainability, signed by more than 178
countries.

- In December 1992 they formed the Sustainable


Development Comission, to assure the continuity of the
UNCED and to ensure the realization of local, national,
regional and international agreements.

After this very concrete actions, a global awarness about


the importance of this topics started to arise, and dozens of
organisms, asociations and investigations related to
sustainability were created.

overriding relevance, because it lets us understand how this agents
interact, affect and regulate between them.
