Goal theory is an overall approach to motivation that

emphasizes the need to establish goals as intrinsic
motivation.

Goal theory states that several conditions are particularly

important in successful achievement. These include goal
acceptance and commitment, goal specificity, goal
difficulty, and feedback.
TWO GOAL ORIENTATION

Goal Orientation refers to the reasons why a student chooses to

engage in a task.

Mastery Orientation: Performance Orientation:

• Developing competence • Demonstrating competence
ex. A student tells you that she likes ex. A student wants to show how much
science and that’s why she works hard. more he knows than the rest of his class.

overcoming challenges.
Ex. A student says that she likes science and that is why she puts a lot of effort into it.
2. Mastery Avoidance: focus working to avoid a lack of mastery or to
avoid failure.
Ex. A student tells you that she is worried that she will not be able to learn everything that

provide their ability relative to others.
Ex. A student answers questions to show the class how much he knows about the subject.

How is Goal Theory applied in practical
settings?

• Include learners in goal setting

• Set specific goals
• Set individual goals
• Provide ongoing feedback
• Have learners be active in setting goals and the review
process
• Ensure that goals are focused on areas that are important to
current and future goals
