Anushka Baranwal proposes a science fair experiment to test how different substances affect the melting of ice. The independent variable is the type of substance placed on ice plates, including salt, sugar, flour, baking soda, rice, and water. The dependent variable is the time taken for each substance, as measured by a stopwatch. Controls include consistent freezer temperature, plate size, and amounts of ice and substance. The hypothesis is that salt will melt the ice fastest. Procedures describe freezing water in plates, applying substances, and timing melting. Results will show which substance melts ice most rapidly.

Independent Variable: The Different types of substance.
Dependent Variable: Stopwatch
Constants: Freezer, Plates, measurement cup, and Stopwatch.
Control: Freezer, Sharpie Marker, Stopwatch
Measurement Tool: Stopwatch
Hypothesis If different types of substance are tested on ice, then salt will be the fast one to melt the ice. Materials Great Value Salt Great Value light Brown Sugar King Arthur Baking Company 100% Whole Grain Whole Wheat Flour. Great Value Baking soda Tap Water Miracle-Gro Potting Mix Great Value Whole Grain White rice 5 Mainstays plates Stopwatch Freezer Measurement Cup Procedures • 1- Place a Mainstays Plate in the freezer • 2-Fill The plate with 2 cups of tap water. • 3- Let the Plate freeze for 3 hours. • 4- Do The same with the other 4 plates. • 5- Get 1/3 cups of the substance you are using. • 6-Get out One Plate leave the other ones to prevent melting. • 7- Spread out the substance that you are using on the ice. • 8- Repeat the same steps with the other substances. • 9-Graph your data as you go along. Independent Variable-The Different types of substance put on top of the ice.
Dependent Variable-Timer to see
Variable how fast the ice will melt.
Controlled Variable-Amount of ice,
amount of substance, plain ice Data Data Real-World Application This experiment helps people know that ice melts faster that ice. This can be use because ice can break down sidewalks.
