WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL
BEHAVIOR?
• It is the study and application of knowledge
about how people- as individual and as a group
act within an organization.
• It is a field of study that investigates the impact
that individuals, groups and structure have on
behavior within organizations for the purpose of
applying such knowledge towards improving an
organization’s effectiveness.
Four Goals of Organizational Behavior
• DESCRIBE- (how people behave under
variety of conditions)
• UNDERSTAND- (why people behave as they
do)
• PREDICTING future employee behavior

Field
• PSYCHOLOGY is the science that seeks to measure ,
explain and sometimes change the behavior of
humans and other animals.
• SOCIOLOGY study of people in relation to their fellow
human beings.
• SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY is an area within philosophy,
blending concepts from both psychology and
sociology. It focuses on the influence of people on one
another.
• ANTHROPOLOGY is the study of societies to
learn about human beings and their activities.
• POLITICAL SCIENCE studies the behavior of
individual and groups within a political
environment.

APPROACHES TO OB
• HUMAN APPROACH (SUPPORTIVE
APPROACH)
-this approach is developmental, it is concerned
with the growth and development of people
toward higher levels of competency, creativity
and fulfillment because people are the central
resource in any organization and any society.
• CONTINGENCY APPROACH
- this approach means that different situations
require different behavioral practices for
effectiveness.
- the strength of this approach is that it
encourages analysis of each situations prior to
action while at the same time discouraging
habitual practices based on universal assumptions
about people.
• RESULT ORIENTED APPROACH
- all organizationsneed to achieve some
relevant outcomes or results. And a dominant
goal for many is to be productive so this results
orientation is a common thread woven through
organizational behavior.

Productivity- is the ratio that compares units of


outputs with units of input.
In Summary:
• The study of organizational behavior
gives insight on how employees behave and
perform in the workplace. It helps us develop an
understanding of the aspects that can motivate
employees, increase their performance, and
help organizations establish a strong and
trusting relationship with their employees.
